• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hi,
I'm Meredith. I've been around here posting mostly on the self harm, and bipolar sections. When I brought up the idea of BPD to my therapist. She said no, she didn't think I had it. But I still do. I totally relate to all those feelings. The black and white thinking, the trouble w/ interpersonal relationships, although I don't have any trouble w/ impulsiveness so my relationships stay intact...the emotional end of it is the same for me. I have the push/pull love hate. But mostly I have extereme identity problems, self esteem issues, and abandoment issues. How could my therapist not see it? Anyways thought it'd be cool to come and hang with you all. It's always nice to find people who understand.

It could be that you may have a Personality Disorder NOS (Not Otherwise Specified) with Borderline features.

In order to get the BPD official diagnosis, you must have five of the nine criterion. If you are missing one, then the therapist may simply say you are Bipolar with borderline features, or Personality Disorder NOS.

The diagnosis is not as important as the therapy, IMHO. The important thing is to have a good cognitive behavioral therapist who can work with you on the issues that you are dealing with.

Glad you are here.

Hugs,
Trish

This may not be the right place for this, forgive me if it's not, but, my husband's daughter was kicked out of the army for having bpd. So I looked it up on the internet, and it sounded just like my husband. I read the traits to him, and he said who does that sound like? So my question is, if my husband indeed has this, what do I need to understand about it? What can I do to help him? He has never been officially diagnosed, but he has everything on the list that I saw for it, anyway.

Thank you all for your warm welcome. I have been reading your replies. Funny thing is that I have well over 5 of the criterion. Sometimes i feel like marching into therapy w/ the criterion in hand and say here check off which of these apply and then tell me you don't think I have BPD. But with the stimga and all I figure, why bother. I know i have it.

Romanseight, there are many good books about BPD I'd read up on it so you can be informed. I found once I understood some of the reason I do certain things my husband and I became a little more compassionate in understanding the behaviors, which alone helped to minimize some of the symptoms.

Take the criterion into therapy and do just that. Stigma or not, understanding your diagnosis and having the therapist work with you on it is the best as far as my experience tells me.

I do understand the stigma. In that I am recovered from it, I work in a psychiatric hospital. I would never tell my coworkers my diagnosis, past present or whatever.

I don't know if I could actually do that. Last time i felt feeling lame for implying that I might actually have it and getting shot down and I felt stupid for trying to self diagnosis. She thinks I'm a self help junkie. WEll i suppose there could be worse things to do?
