• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I suffer from mostly a general/social anxiety disorder. It also causes me to be very depressed at times. I just thought I would post on here to hopefully connect with some of you who share the same struggles. It's always nice to have fellowship with people who can understand what you are going through. I have quit meds for about 4 or 5 months, but I am going to the doctor tomorrow, so I will probably get some new ones. Sometimes anxiety makes my life so hard! A lot of the time it interferes with my sleeping. It's a tough thing, but I continue to pray about it and get support, though its always so nice to have more. Feel free to post or pm me if you'd like. I look forward to meeting you!

Hey frenzy, nice to meet you! :)

There are plenty of us here who empathize with you. I struggle with generalized anxiety as well, as well as some obsessive thinking and depression. It's something that I've been trying to heal from one day at a time, and slowly learning to give everything to God. Anxiety sometimes interferes with my life as well. I'm more prone to isolating myself and avoiding social situations when I'm anxious. I also get appetite struggles.

Hopefully you'll find great support here. Sometimes the board runs a little bit slow, but just give each post a few days and you should have some great replies.

 Hi frenzy,

Thanks for posting a note and introducing yourself. I have some anxiety from time to time, but haven't had much recently. I do have a medication I take if needed but haven't taken any in about 4 months now.

Thank you very much! I'm the same way as you about social situations, and it messes with my eating habits as well. May I ask how you are treating your anxiety?

I've been treating mine first by recognizing faulty thinking patterns (ways of thinking that are negative, fearful, etc) and trying to replace them with positivity and God-focused thoughts. Relaxing my mind whenever possible also helps me to get grounded. When I catch myself dwelling on anything that's not helpful to my mood, I like to catch it and let it go. Sometimes I say outloud "God, I'm letting this worry go to you right now." Reading the Bible is very encouraging, particularly the Psalms and the New Testament. It helps me to focus on the good to come, rather than my wavering feelings.

I try not to let myself stay isolated for too long. I love talking to people, because it helps me to express my fears and feelings to someone who's understanding. CF has helped me a lot in my journey because there are people here who are helpful and don't have any preconceived judgments to hold.

I've also had much success with basing my diet on all-natural, high-protein foods and eating every few hours (even if I don't feel like it). I'm much more calm when I'm putting the right nutrients into my body. Some supplementation of important vitamins helps my brain function better as well.

I don't take medication because I prefer a fully natural approach, but I understand that some people reap many benefits from it.

Hi frenzy

Welcome to the Forums. There are a few of us here who can understand the struggle with anxiety.

I have only recently stopped my sessions with my psychologist to try and deal with my social anxiety and panic attacks although it is still a struggle. My problems mainly focus around church and social functions involving church, although this anxiety spreads to different areas as well.

I'm not any meds at the moment and have avoided this so far as I'm not entirely sure on whether I want to take them. This is still a topic for consideration for me...

I have posted on a number of threads in this section of the forums and I'm sure if you check out some of the different threads you may see some of my posts which give a little insight into what I go through.

It is nice to know you're not alone in this, I know, and you have come to a good place to get some support and understanding.

Hi Frenzy,
Welcome. I just joined a few days ago and I have found a great support group and other people like me. When I get anxiety I usually feel like nobody else in the world knows how I feel . This forum has really helped to know that I am not alone and that people actually care about you even if they don't know you.
Since I usually get anxiety at night, I have been logging on to the forum before bedtime and reading posts and people's messages and just interacting with ongoing discussions which helps not get an attack and helps with rationalizing the fear.
It also helps to explain to my sister or my friends how I am feeling. I sometimes just write down what I feel so I can express myself and let it all out. I would say talking it out with others is one of the best ways of getting through an anxiety spell.
Since I can't really eat when anxious, I drink some calming tea like camomille or some herbal stuff. Honey in tea is supposed to help you relax.

I found the psychologist helpful just in explaining to me how how the brain works and why I have some of the problems I have. It kind of helped me to look at my body reactions to stressful situations from a different perspective and helped me maybe not be so harsh on myself. She also helped give me some techniques in dealing with some of my thought patterns.

Step by step...Little by little

Just wondering what are the explanations your pysch gave you?

After going through some of my history growing up she explained that there is a part in the middle of the brain that even as we are developing in the womb reacts to stressful situations/reaction experienced by the mother carrying the baby (she even showed me a diagram of the brain). My mother had many problems herself growing up and realistically had her own mental health issues as well as stress and anxiety all possibly while pregnant with me. The psych also went on to say that this can effect the development of that particular part of the brain up until nearly 2 years old. Now I haven't researched it thoroughly myself but alot of what she said makes sense when I start to look at my life back as far as I can remember.

Just life situations have effected my reactions and stress levels but I know that having a not so optimal emotional environment possibly did not help in helping me to learn to cope in a positive way with stress.

I keep holding onto Jesus and believing that he can show me the way to healing and changing me.

Yeah I definetly feel like the family atmosphere can cause problems for the pregnant mother. I think it was stressful with my family bfore I was born.
& too there are the spiritual issues involved along with the physical. There are no quick easy answers are there?
