Hi, I'm really excited to be here.

I used to be heavily involved in some forums years ago before social media took off, but all of them died. I need to see some actual Christian content on the internet, and interact with Christians who take the word of God seriously, and I just am not getting that anywhere online.

I'm a stay at home dad to five kids, and I'm currently working on finishing my degree in Psychology. I helped my wife start a business and I handle the books for that. I was raised in a cult, the Mormons, and I'm very grateful to have found real and profound grace in actual Christianity.

Yep that’s a Martin Luther toy. I usually like to use friendly avatars.

I also have the same icon hanging on my wall. I got it from a previous Lutheran pastor.

It would be great to hear about your experiences at a Lutheran chapel.

It would be great to hear about your experiences at a Lutheran chapel.

The short version is when I was newly married I moved across the country with my wife for her graduate studies, and I prayed and prayed about where to go to church, and through a rather unusual sequence, God lead us to the Lutheran chapel in town.

The pastor was very interested in the patristics, and read them for fun, and also very interested in theology. Any question I had, he knew how to point me to finding the answers, and I learned so much about the early Church and ancient church politics. He was not a particularly mystical fellow, but when I was having a crisis where I couldn't hear from God anymore, he directed me to The Dark Night of the Soul by St. John of the Cross, which outlines how to know if a desert time is due to sin, or due to God stirring up a hunger for more of Him, and after I read that book, everything clicked again for me.

He was also very interested in monastic life, and did the noontime (sext) and end of the day (compline) prayer services, which were very quiet and meditative and heavy on scripture, and I loved them too.

I particularly appreciated the Lutheran theological appreciation of paradox, and their seems to be more of an emphasis on beauty in the Lutheran tradition than most others I've experienced.

If my wife were at all a fan of icons, I'd collect them myself. My favorite is this one of the trinity:

welcome! extending right hand for a shake not the dreaded double hand shake that greeters now use when you visit a church. The only guy that gives you double hand is the mortician who says "I'm so sorry for your loss". All others are communicating through body language they want something and are trying to hard to gain your trust like a real estate agent who meets you with the double hand and says its a good time to buy, or sell depending on your position. I welcome you and over time trust and friendships grow and then hugs are exchanged. I digress a bit but think this a bit funny. No elbow fist bumps either.

Welcome to CF, Telemachus! Thankful you are here!!!! Wow prayers and blessings to you, your wife, and 5 kids. My hubby and I have two littles and they keep us on our toes.

I had almost got into Mormonism in the past thinking it was Christianity, but it is not. I am thankful that you see that and came to know the real and profound grace of Jesus Christ and the infallible Word of God. Welcome!
