  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hell poll

What do you believe hell is?

  • Eternal physical torment

  • Eternal seperation/loneliness/mental distress

  • Annihilation

  • As a place of correction - universalism

  • Other (please explain)

  • There is no such place at all.

I don't believe hell exists...I don't believe that the three words (sheol, hades, gehenna) which are commonly translated as hell actually mean hell at all. there may be something temporary for correction/purification but I certainly don't believe in a place of eternal torment.

Eternal separation...I believe that there is almost certainly also physical torment in hell after the resurrection of the dead and the reanimation of our bodies at Judgement Day, but that the spiritual seperation from God is the definition of my understanding of hell, and the greatest suffering of all.

Other. Hell is not separation from God, you will be only too aware of him. Except you will not know his favour, only his wrath for rejecting the salvation that is offered to all.

Who's going to start the poll asking whether we believe heaven exists. Something tells me there'll be more who believe in it's existence than the 'other place'.

I am surprised to see you state that salvation is offered to all bearing in mind your Calvinist icon. Just curious :)

That makes sense, if God is indeed omnipresent. Just wondering though, would the presence of God's wrath (in your understanding) involve physical torment or mental torment? Or just shame?

Also, to the Christians who do not believe in hell at all, what happens to the unbelievers in this case? I have included an option for universalism and one for annihilation, so what would happen to them?

I believe they will eventually be saved. As I think I said before, I believe there may be a place of temporary punishment/purification that either unbelievers or all shall go through. If I could have I would have selected both universalism and "doesn't exist".

saved from what Jellybean?
im being theoretical...

yes yes im an atheist :D but im just getting into the conversation too much...

i'll explain my postion on heaven and hell.

I dont beleive in them, but i think you can have hell on Earth (which is easy) and heaven on Earth (which takes lots of work).... this position sort of reflects Jesus's sayings on the road to hell is wide and easy and the road to heaven narrow and hard. (in my own words ;) )

well you know God beter than most Christians I know then:p

really,I sorta agree with you here:hug:

i believe Jesus teachings,Gods law is purely for us,not or afterlife purposes,or for some petty marking of things we mess up

i was atheist,as atheist as you can be:p,till I was 21
then without any effort or search on my side-there was God in my life, and gosh I tried to dispute it for at least 10 years, gave up finaly some time ago..cant be done, cos if I am real,so is God

i am in agreement with you here, that the only salvation we need is here now, from our fear, the father of all evil :sigh:

and that is where we are, lving in hell here now, till we get freed from fears
and Gods love replaces that..Jesus tought many practical things, deservesa new thread really..before Buttermilks wrath will descend on us for derailing
