  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hebrews 2:5-9

Several websites explain verses 6-8 as being about the stewardship of the earth that God has given to humanity. I have always read it as having a dual meaning: (1) a general expression of the importance of humanity in God’s eyes, and (2) a primarily intended reference to Jesus, God Incarnate, who died for our sins to give us a living hope.

What is your understanding?

I agree with your interpretation as you wrote in (1) and (2)

Reading it in a modern translation is helpful for me ~

Heb 2:5 And furthermore, it is not angels who will control the future world we are talking about.

Heb 2:6 For in one place the Scriptures say, “What are mere mortals that you should think about them, or a son of man that you should care for him?

Heb 2:7 Yet for a little while you made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.

Heb 2:8 You gave them authority over all things.” Now when it says “all things,” it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all things put under their authority.

Heb 2:9 What we do see is Jesus, who for a little while was given a position “a little lower than the angels”; and because he suffered death for us, he is now “crowned with glory and honor.” Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone.

I believe that when man was created, God gave Adam "authority over all things" ~

Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” Genesis 1:28.
But after sin came into the world, man lost that authority over the rest of creation.

The answer is a little lower in the 9th verse:

Heb 2:7-9
7 Thou madest Him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst Him with glory and honour, and didst set Him over the works of Thy hands:

8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under His feet. For in that He put all in subjection under Him, He left nothing that is not put under Him. But now we see not yet all things put under Him.

9 But we see Jesus, Who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

KJV

It is all about Lord Jesus.

Jesus as The Christ was not 'made' or created. Jesus is GOD, having been born in the flesh through woman's womb, being called, "God with us" (Immanuel). Thus for the reason of His being born in the flesh like us, and suffering like us, that is the sense that those Hebrews verses is pointing to. It doesn't mean He is an angel, because what angel was born in the flesh to suffer on the cross? That was explained back in the Hebrews 1 Chapter.
