• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't think it is a matter of not having enough faith. God is still in the healing business, however, God has provided us with various medications to help specific problems.
I would just say, don't stop praying for healing, but in the meantime, use medications your doctor recommends as long as he is qualified. You are not proving you have a lack of faith while you take current medications. Keep praying and keep taking...I hope some of that made sense.
God Bless

If you need to take meds for MH issues does it really mean you don't have enough faith to be healed?[/quote,

Hello David,

Although there are a small minority of Christians (mostly cults) who believe the thing about not having enough faith, the majority of Christians don't believe that and we acknowledge that medical science is as much God's work as anything else that is good. God created medicine to help us on this earth and taking medication has nothing to do with faith. Please don't get down on yourself for this and instead know that you are doing something to help better your life.

God bless you in your endeavors and please feel free to visit the Ask a Chaplain Forum if you'd like to talk with one of the forum chaplains. You can access AAC by clicking on the icon below.

Faithfully,
CH Sacerdote

I agree with what others have said here.
Mental health meds are no different to any other meds. You wouldn't tell a diabetic that taking insulin means they have no faith - and it's just the same.
Keep praying, but don't stop taking meds until after you are healed, not before!!

Absolutely not. Do people who take medications for other health issues have faith issues? No.

Sometimes people just need medication. God can use doctors, medications, etc just as much as the miraculous. In fact, most of the time He chooses to use humans and medicines.

As the others have said, there is no problem with your faith reflected in taking medications for MH issues or any other issues. God is your Father in Heaven. He wants His kids healthy and able to function at their best. Meds are one way He achieves that.

Praying for you. And welcome to the forum! Do come back and let us know how you're doing.

Blessings,

Definitely not. I take meds and while I don't want to take them, the chemical imbalance in my body isn't giving me that option right now. That would be like saying someone who has diabetes or cancer doesn't have enough faith.

I agree with the posters above -- God gave us the ability to overcome these issues with medicine in addition to therapy, spiritual counseling, etc. I take advantage of every opportunity available for me to be well.

I couldn't agree more with what has already been said. Taking medication is not a sign of weakness nor is it a lack of faith. Don't do yourself down! I think it is really brave to take medication, go to therapy etc., as it shows self-awareness and the fact that you are willing to do something about it.

God bless you always.

As someone who has gone the "faith" route and crashed/burned horribly from the experience, I would rather see you on meds. Eventually, I would like to be off meds and I hope you can be off meds, but that day may never come for me. Now, it may be because I do not have enough faith; I will readily admit that. But if I do try to go off medicines, it is going to be very gradually. Otherwise, I feel as if I am forcing God's hand/testing him.
And I don't feel like going back to that hellhole! Best of luck.
