• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I am in a struggle with alcohol abuse at this stage of my life and i feel like it is distancing me from the lord and really taking my life in a bad direction. I am lost and i don't know what to do and how to combat this addiction. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and God Bless!

The best way I found to combat my alcohol addiction is through regular attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and working the 12 steps of recovery they teach there. Alcoholics Anonymous :

God bless.

By all means, follow up on that. I think you'll be quite pleasantly surprised to learn AA is not what you think it is or have been told it is; but a lot better!

Also, keep posting here. You'll meet people still struggling, people with years of settled sobriety, and people somewhere in between. You name the mistake, someone here has made it, likely a lot more than once. We - and those you'll meet in AA - have been where you are now.

Hey fellow traveler,

I am a fully loved and fully accepted follower of Jesus Christ who is in recovery from alcohol addiction! I believe that Jesus can set you free at this very moment if you ask Him but, it has been my experience that He uses groups like Celebrate Recovery (Christ centered recovery program) to help us. That is where I have found Christian community and encouragement to help me find Hope and Freedom! Just Google Celebrate Recovery in your area and check it out. I am a worship leader at Celebrate Recovery and I believe the real power comes from Jesus! Trust Him, it is He who brought you to this point and He has put the desire for healing in your heart!!!

Peace,
Aaron

I have never been to Celebrate Recovery, because they are not as convenient to me as AA is. The beauty part of recovery is that God uses both AA and Celebrate Recovery to bring people to freedom from alcohol.

Amen to that. The best part is that He loves us whether we are alone, or in a fellowship. He loves us regardless of our sobriety date. He just loves us.

Have faith, my friend. You can make it. I was described by my sponsor as a "severe alcoholic", and he was qualified to recognize one. And yet I stand now with 2.5 yrs of sobriety!

Along the way I discovered that the Word of God was more powerful than I originally gave it credit for. Part of our alcoholism is due to wrong thinking; and we must counter that with right thinking. The picture I chose as my profile picture at this time is a stark reminder to me of the battle. Along with it, in my recovery plan are the words of Proverbs 23:29-35 and John 10:10. I read them every day, and have done so for several years. It makes a difference.

I remind myself each day, "Alcohol is not my friend; it is a thief, here only to steal, kill, and destroy."

In Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone, in the power of the Spirit alone,
Garden-Variety Alcoholic
