• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Your not the only one who hates asthma. I have had asthma all my life (so the docs and my parents think) but not ever dignosed until about 8 years ago when I was 8. I have been on so many meds and currently are on 3 meds its not even funny. I hate it expecially in PE. I heard you outgrow it between the ages of 20-30 if you had it when you were a juvinal but instead of mine getting better its causing more problems. Why is asthma even around? I hate it to!

I have it too, so please understand what I'm going to post.

God hates death and disease. That's why He sent Jesus to die on the cross, so that we will have new life, one that never ends and never has any sorrow, pain, suffering or disease.

Jesus broke the chains of death - so one day, death itself will die. That's why we have Easter.

I so look forward to that day, when there will be no more sorrow, sadness and He will dry every tear.

For now, we have our lives in a fallen world. He uses all these different trials to bring us closer to Himself.

This is part of the mystery of the Christian belief - why does God allow suffering. Countless believers and non-believers have struggled with this throughout the centuries, so for what it's worth, you aren't alone in your questioning.

One day, it will all be behind us.

I've had asthma all my life (which at almost 17 isn't that long!), I've learned to live with it. I used to hate it when I was younger...but it was only becuase I didn't understnad why i couldn't do stuff like the other kids. Thankfully it's calmed down in past years...I've only been hospitaziled once, and it was when Iw as really young. It rarely hampers my singing (oh man, one time I had to sing in the praise team for worship and i had a very mild attack...but I still went up on stage...even though I had a red face adn wet eyes!) which when I sing in choir as an alto (sometime tenor) and help lead worship for youth group is a miracle in itself! I've learned to accept my asthma, and learned to be thankful that it isn't something worse.

More and more people have asthma, and more and more people are developing asthma as adults. It's due in part to the high pollution levels we are seeing just about everywhere these days.
In some areas, like humid areas, stuff like mold and spores trigger asthma in people.
I developed asthma in my late 20's and I hate it. It just gets worse with time.

I got mine at 21yrs old...so now I've had it for 12yrs. I agree, asthma landed me in the hospital on more than one occasion...but now that I stay regular with meds and as soon as I feel a sinus infection or bronchitis coming on...I start my nebulizer treatments ASAP. They are a life - saver

I've had mine since I was 10, but I've taken swimming and its a lot less worse than what it used to be. Unfortunately, asthma has changed the course of my life in a way which I very much dislike. The US Army excepts no one who has had a record of an asthma attack at the age of 13(I WAS LAST HOSPITALIZED AT 14!!!). I understand that some people have it really bad, but for me, just the prospect of having it, even with attacks few and far between, is bad enough.

However, as asthma itself seems to be an auto-immune disorder, its symptoms are much like other auto-immune responses. When I gave up certain foods for Lent this year, my "asthma" almost completely went away.
Only because I gave that food up for Lent am I able now to see that when I eat certain foods, I almost immediately have terrible attacks of "asthma."

So perhaps what some of us think is "asthma" may actually be a food or other allergy, and if so, there may be hope for "getting over it" by giving up the food(s).

Maybe just for you. Some people have different triggers, like a thunderstorm. I usually had an asthma attack on a day I wouldn't expect it. I don't eat anything special when it comes, although I have had an attack for a while now.

I just made my comments because for the last 10 years I have thought that I had asthma and would be on medication for it the rest of my life.
If someone had shared with me that possibility years ago, I might have been spared alot of grief. So I figured I'd share it in case it could help someone else, too.

If you can isolate your trigger(s) and they are something you can have any degree of control over, you can really dramatically reduce the symptoms.

I've had asthma since i was 3, I'm 25 now. Just like any major illness (diabetes for example), you have to be smart and manage yourself. You have to take your meds exactly as prescribed and stay away from your triggers. Another thing is staying CALM. If you feel an attack coming on, do your best to relax. If you flip out, it'll just make it worse. I'm on advair and singulair right now, and my meds have my asthma under control(despite the fact that I'm overweight). If you've got any questions, feel free to drop me a line.

I didn't get asthma until as an adult. I've been around smokers all of my life, and although I've never smoked myself, that is the one nasty trigger in my ailment. The family members who smoke think I'm crazy. They refuse to quit, and they refuse to allow me to stay away from it. I had some light symptoms of asthma as early as the age of 27. Colds always hit me harder, and last longer than anyone in my family. If I could get away from the smoke, then maybe I could live my life. :(

Couldn't your doctor speak to your family members?
