This is an interesting email I got on Harry Potter. Read and decide for yourself but I am now convinced that Harry Potter is occultic.

All interesting thoughts... but I'm keen to find out who of you have actually read/seen the HP (hehe... it's all a play by Hewlett-Packard to take over the world!) material though? Or are we all getting our opinions/facts through third party sources? Are we all making properly informed decisions and formulating our thoughts on a personally determined basis?

You all have very good points! I mean does that mean we can't watch "Lord of the Rings" as well cos there's some stuff in that too...

I think it's a difficult issue to get around...But well, the best we can do is inform people of what's going on and let THEM make the decisions themselves...I always believe all these things are based on one's own CONVICTIONS!

I actually asked someone whether it would be bad to watch the Harry Potter movie because I really wanted to watch it and the person said to me, "Ask Jesus". So I say to you all the same thing, "Ask Jesus" and see what He says. The DECISION is yours!

I just heard on the radio that when the Harry Potter movie came out yesterday in Australia, at the same time the first annual witches' conference was held in Queensland - sorcery and witchcraft was removed from the Queensland Criminal Code only last year.

It's an interesting coincidence... or is it?

The Henry Potter books are an oportunity also. To tell people about Jesus being the way the truth and the life

I only know about the book from the hype. But the kid went to school. Well, Jesus decipled his deciples so that is like school. Really find a youth and deciple him!!!

I guess I may the be the only one on this post to say I actually enjoy the Harry Potter series. But then I can also say I respect the opinions of others. I really think it is this generations "Wizard of Oz", I know lots of kids who read it and not one have ever mentioned they would really like to learn about Witchcraft or anything else, well maybe that they would love to fly on a broomstick, but that is just the kid in them. One important factor to remember is that the books are complete fantasy! But also needless to say that Christians should have the knowledge to know the difference. While true that these books are not for small children and maybe not for some even older kids, if a child wants to read these books, maybe parents should read it first and then read along with the child to explain to him that Witchery is evil and make sure they know the difference. I read all 4 books and still have a strong enough belief in Christ, not to turn my heart towards such darkness. I hope all that makes sense, lol. =)
GOd Bless You All!

The Wizard Of Oz actually had economic ramifications. The gold standard and all that. Fiction is okay but people also need to read the Bible. Sepersation of Church and state is a farce. Our kids can be exposed to witches and stuff like that but not Christ. Hum, just a thought.

I don't have kids but I don't think I would want them exposed to the Potter books based on what I have read here. Once they are old enough then they can pick their own reading but I don't think the potter books should be required reading for kids.

Okies, this may be a little controversial, but... I've just seen the movie? And believe it or not, after a little discussion with my fellow attendee, I honestly think that it isn't far from the level of fantasy that C.S. Lewis envokes.

I don't think that the danger or the fear of the movie really lies in what it presents, but perhaps that people relate much more easily to this author and this fictional character than they do to the church. How well are we translating God into real life?

It is, essentially, a Cinderalla story. And that's what people see, that's why they read and watch it. Yes, it is based on real life spells, as such, and yes, it does have an evil guy too. But is this what draws people?

My contention, is no. Interest in the occult is one thing, but there are plenty of fantasy/magic/k books out there for people to read, so why Harry Potter? What about it strikes such a chord in the lives of so many people?

I think it's because Harry is a character that we'd all like to believe we are, or can be.

Harry's an orphan, raised by a family who keeps him locked up under the stairs (a la Cinderalla) and makes him do their chores.

But in some magical world somewhere his name is legendary. A place where people believe in him, a place where he has deep founded and sacrificial friends and loving parental figures.

You know what? I think, that if our churches were like these other worlds, in that they were able to create an environment in which people felt this way and found these things too, then perhaps this discussion would be a little different

I'm not about to go challenge you all to go see it (*chuckle*, I can already envision the trouble I get into), but I AM going to challenge all of you to make your own decisions and opinions, rather than rely on those of third parties or your peers.

On that note, are there any others that have either read the books (I haven't) or seen the movie (done that one)? I'm extremely interested to hear what you've found, whether similar or polarisingly different.

I just want to make a friendly note to the pastor who posted above. You stated that there were certain words used in HP that were names of real devils, one of those words being Erised. In the book, that is the name of a mirror that shows exactly what the on-looker wants to see. There is where you get the name Erised, it is an anagram of DESIRE. Hope that clears a few things up on that one.
God Bless You All!
