  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I do not see why Christians make a big fuss about watching porns.
I mean, porns are harmless!

1) Sex after marriage is an okay thing for Christians. Since sex is created by God for couples to enjoy, what is the harm in watching porns?

2) Porns provide sex education for otherwise, ignorant couples. Porn is a good way to teach you how to have sex.

3) Porn is provided for by people who consent to having their naked pictures taken online. Since it is a consented thing, it surely can't be harmful.

Therefore, I think christians really shouldn't make a big fuss about not watching porn.

I agree, there should be more porn!
Wait what?

I wasn't aware that Christians felt so strongly about porn.
If you don't want to watch porn then no one is forcing you to buy a DVD, put it into your DVDplayer, press play and unzip your pants...

So why do the opposite? As in: try to limit the rights of others that don't agree with your opinion?

I see what you're saying but a couple of things.

) Porns provide sex education for otherwise, ignorant couples. Porn is a good way to teach you how to have sex.

Well I think that's debatable, personally for me I don't think porn is a good way to learn how to have sex. I guess it's because it just causes causes couples to just simply mimic what they see. Instead of just trying to understand what your partner's needs are. I mean, just because you see a certain position in porno that doesn't mean you're partner is going to like it.

3) Porn is provided for by people who consent to having their naked pictures taken online. Since it is a consented thing, it surely can't be harmful.

Are you certain of this? Porn is just more than having your naked pictures taken online. Also I wouldn't exactly say that all porn is truly consented. In some ways I do think certain kinds of porn have the potential to be harmful.

Porn actually is very harmful.

I will give you two reasons, it is very addictive and it has been very known to destroy marriages.

Porn is all about pleasing your flesh, well a Christian is out to please the Lord not be selfish and indulge into self-gratification.

sex was NOT created for couples to have sex. It was created for married couples, and is used in procreation. Fornication (pre-marrital sex) is a sin. It is not what the Lord had planned.

There is a reason why God wants us to stay away from it.

If I consent you in shooting me with a gun, is it harmful? Just because someone gives there consent in doing something, doesnt mean it is not harmful.

Since when have human beings ever known the difference between what is and is not harmful to us? Never..that is why we are always getting ourselves put in the middle of harms way even killed on a continous basis.

Porn is not a good way to teach couples to have sex. all it is, is lust and there are obortions all over the world because of this "safe sex"

When have you ever saw a porn movie teach about the diseases that can be passed on by sexual intercoarse?

When have you ever seen a porn movie teach you anything except vile passions between two human beings?

In the end, porn is very harmful, and it is saturated throughout the world.

The problem with these two reasons is that there are countless of people who do just FINE with porn in their lives without it ruining their marriages. In a lot of cases it actually helps them.

So if all these people can cope with it just fine, does that make those who can't weakminded addicts?
It doesn't seem fair to throw everything into one pile just because certain people have a problem with it.

No one is forcing you to watch porn.

I totally agree. Let's break this down a bit. This isn't really about 'porn'...this is about watching people have sex. Who wouldn't like to watch people have sex? It is a very enjoyable thing to watch...or be engaged in. God created nakedness...and sex. So when you watch people have sex...you are watching something that God purposed. I believe it is something to thank God for...not something to treat like it is 'dirty' or wrong. Granted...some porn is nasty...but other porn is not. Some...more 'tasteful' porn is simply people enjoying themselves. That is not harmful to anyone...except to those that can't accept it for what it is. They should not watch it...nor should they condemn those whose consciouses (sp?) are not violated by it.

IMHO,
CC

Hmmm, I gotta say, when my boyfriend found my stash, he thought it was hilarious. I was mortally embarrassed, but then we got to watching it together and then BUNNIES RAINBOWS UNICORNS DANCING DAFFODILS and it was great. So, as far as I can tell, porn is not at all bad for relationships so long as both people in the relationship are comfortable with it.

On the other hand, I do not believe it is completely harmless either. The sad truth is that a lot of the people who end up posing and gettin' it on for the camera are only doing so because they can't find any other good way to support themselves. Some are coerced, or just used, and it's such a shady business that little is done to regulate and control what happens to the actors. No political power wants to touch the issue with a ten foot pole. Is there a porn workers union? I don't know.

Then again, some of them (especially in the higher end films) genuinely enjoy the work and are well paid and treated.

There is also the issue of feminism and how women are portrayed, but I do not think that is as serious as some make it out to be. Porn tends to fufill one's kinkier fantasies, things that a person would never actually try or even want to do, but that get them aroused for some reason or another. There is also a bit of a safety barrier there, knowing the people on the screen are actors and not actually getting hurt. Someone who feels like damaging another human being is okay because they saw it on TV has greater problems than porn consumption. And there is porn involving male humiliation too, not to mention the wide arena of gay porn (often enjoyed by straights who, again, would not do that in a million years) where the question of female subjugation becomes moot.

Also, there's a lot of porn out there that contains depictions of love and tenderness, which is the pornographic equivalent of a chick flick, I suppose. (That's the kind my boyfriend likes though, which I think is very cute if a little dull).

So, it's not completely harmless, but it's not a horrible travesty either, methinks. Definitely things could be cleaner, but isn't that true of all industries?

Jesus equates watching porn with committing adultery. Adultery is breaking one of God's commands. Adulterers will not see the kingdom of heaven.

That's why Christians make a fuss.

Porn is a distortion of the purpose of sexual behavior. Porn is no better than the misapplication of actual sexual acts. It might also be added that porn likely leads to various sexual experimentation that has the capacity to confuse even gender roles.

If porn was only pictures of people having consenual sex, there might be a case to be made for it, and I would classify it as erotica.

But porn is not just pictures of people having consenual sex.

It's pictures of women forced to have sex or kinds of sex they do not want. It's pictures of women who are ready and eager for sex with strangers at the drop of the hat. It's picture's of men [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] into women's faces. Porn is pictures of women being treated as animals - tied to the bumper of a car llike a deer, being saddled like a horse, being whipped and being ground up into a meat grinder. It's photos of children being treated in these same ways.

Porn distorts sex.

Whoa whoa whoa. That's an awfully broad brush you're using there. Yeah, some porn is pretty terrible, but a lot if it is just really hot. There's a lot of porn that, while still obscene, is not otherwise morally reprehensible. There's lots of porn that just extremely hot consensual sex, with no abuse of any kind, no children, no bondage, and no bestiality. If all you're seeing is the pornography you mentioned, I think that says more about you than it does about pornography as a whole.

Sex outside of marriage is FORNICATION. Watching it and wanting to do it are still thoughts of the heart and remain FORNICATION.

Sex and money make uneasy bedfellows because money muddies the waters around consent*. Ask any prostitute/porn performer. The vast majority (if not all) will have days when they think "You know what, I don't really want to do this; but I've got to get paid, so..."

Most people regard non-consensual sex as wrong. Something damaging to the integrity and dignity of the persons doing it. For some people this may well add to the "kick" of porn. Most other viewers just don't think about it.

In another thread someone tried to make the point that people working in Macdonalds are only doing it for the money too. No sh!t. Most people see non-consensual sex as more damaging than non-consensual working-in Macdonalds though.

If money wasn't involved and no other coercion and all parties were willing exhibitionists/voyeurs then fair enough.

Here's a little experiment to try out. Next time you're knocking one out over your favourite DVD/website etc, think to yourself that there is a good chance that the people you are watching aren't really enjoying it and are doing it to pay the rent, feed their kids, go on vacation etc. Also consider the fact that the majority of the women involved have a history of childhood sexual abuse.
If this dampens your ardour then consider that it may be because something isn't quite right about paying people to have sex so you can watch.
If it increases your ardour then consider what that suggests about your sexualty.

* I wanted to use as many metaphors as possible.

Pff, you know the word for nonconsensual working is slavery, right? I think that undermines your entire argument.

Oneofthedispora...I can say the same things about the next time you go to McDonolds. Do you think as a young child anyone grows up dreaming of one day being the guy who makes french fries at McDonolds??? I doubt it..lol Or the next time your at department store...notice the guys who clean the floor..do you thing that was their dream as young boy/girl...to one day clean the toliets at Macy's? I bet they do not wake up super motivated to go out and clean that toliet..lol

I know you most likely feel that there is some difference between being a porn star and a janitor...but the difference is only in the persons perceptions of that work.
