But as for me, I trust in you, O Lord, I say, "You are my God", my times are in your hand... Psalm 31:14-15a
Hands just take a good look at them. They really are quite remarkable. From infancy we are intrigued by these appendages and they become one of our primary learning tools. As adults we are intrigued by the movements of tiny hands. One Sunday morning as we stood watching a tiny newborn baby peacefully sleeping, a lady gently touched her cheek. The baby's response was immediate - up went her hand. A small toddler always raises his hand and says "Bye Bye" to his Mommy as he leaves the church service to go to the children's program. How can anyone fail to respond to a tiny hand grasping your finger?
On an ordinary day our hands can hold a bar of soap - a toothbrush - a knife and fork - a car key - a steering wheel - a telephone. Hands can manipulate tools and operate machinery. Hands can hold a surgeon's knife - a dentist's drill and administer necessary care.
Hands can hold an artist's brush and turn a piece of canvas into a thing of beauty. An instrument in the hands of a gifted musician can produce glorious music.
Hands can hold a gun - a knife - a syringe filled with harmful drugs - actions that create fear and dread.
Hands can be outstretched in greeting or clenched into a fist in anger.
Hands are controlled by minds bent on good or evil.
Jesus placed his hand on a young child and said "Let the little ones come to me - don't hinder them - for of such is God's kingdom". He took a young lad's picnic lunch and turned it into refreshments for thousands. His hands performed miraculous and loving deeds.
The hands of a trusted follower betrayed Him. The hands of a soldier held a whip and flogged Him. Hands forced a wreath of sharp thorns on his head. Pilate tried to wash guilt from his hands. Hands held a mallet that drove nails through his hands and feet. Hands were raised in derision. Hands threw dice to win his garments.
Kind hands took His body, washed it, wrapped it in linens and laid it in a tomb.
His nail-scarred hands comforted and reassured his distraught disciples and a doubting followers' faith was restored.
I heard this illustration recently - it all depends whose hands it's in. A basketball in my hands - worth a few dollars - In Michael Jordan's hands - Millions A tennis racquet in my hands - worthless - In Pete Sampras' hands - a Wimbledon Championship. A handful of nails in my hands may produce a bird house - Nails in His hands provided Salvation.
General Albert Orsborne penned these words:
Once, on a day, was Christ led forth to die, And with the crowd that pressed on Him joined I. Slowly they led Him, led Him to the tree, And I beheld His hands were no more free! Bound fast with cords! And this was His distress, That men denied those hands outstretched to bless, Dear hands of Christ! and yet men feared them so, That they must bind them, as to death they go.
The choice is ours - it all depends whose hands we're in.
Who's hands are you in today?
