Does your church allow hand-held instruments within the congregation? Like tambourines and what not?
I'm interested to see, it saddens me but I feel like this is a dying practice . . .

If your church does allow it, how do you feel about it? I know some people find it annoying. If your church doesn't allow it, would you like it?

I for one feel it makes the service much more lively and active, people are more encouraged to participate and praise God in different ways. I know I'm always one of the first to run to the instrument corner in church and get my favorite tambourine !

God Bless :wave:

There's NOTHING more dangerious than a tambourine in the hands of a person - with NO RHYTHM!!!!!

In our church there's an older lady who IS qualified to play the tambourine, and she makes it TALK!!!

There was a gal in the Carrollton, TX AoG that had the same talent.

In the Assemblies of God, in the Dallas area, however, in most cases you might think you were in a Baptist church that forgot to change the sign -

I haven't seen it forbidden, but have seen ushers or elders ask people to stand in a different spot.

A tambourine is very harsh on my ears -- I don't know why I seem to hear it differently than others, but if someone plays it near me, I need to move. Wood blocks and shakers are fine -- it's just that combination of high pitches that sets me on edge.

I heard a story of a couple who hid the tambourines. It created quite a stir.

My church occasionally has people use tambourines. No one says anything at all. My aunt has a tambourine that she sometimes brings to church.

Also, there is this lady in our church who, before she got sick, would play the tambourine. It never failed, whenever she picked up a tambourine, she would start shouting and the tambourine would always fly out of her hands across the sanctuary.

I remember in one service I was standing at the back of the church against the wall. She was playing the tambourine and I looked over and she was beginning to shout and the tambourine was flying in the air. Next thing I know, the tambourine barely misses my head as it slams up against the wall!

It's a wonder no one's ever gotten hurt in our services. :D

No instruments out in our congregation. I don't know that there is a rule against it. I was in a small congregation years ago and several of us used to play a tambourine that was in the sets. Also an older gentleman used to whistle all the songs ... kinda miss hearing a good whistler.

Last time I saw the tambourine in the Church, we used overhead projectors to project the lyrics and sang Don Moen songs. This was in the 90s. The tambourine player was part of the worship team, and it was church owned equipment. I don’t think anyone should bring their own instruments in the church without permission.

Now for the lack of tambourines in the Church today, I personally think it’s outdated as the saxophone and the polyphonic synthesizer.

“I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,”
(Ephesians 1:15)

“I bow my knees before the Father, , that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, , so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, , may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth”
(Ephesians 3:14,17,18)

Personally, I don’t think the Church can be seen as though when the digital image turns it’s back on film’s suitable quality. Films quality still gives digital a very good run for his money, but digital wants nothing more to do with him.

For me, I’ve had my share of exposure to “breadth” and “depth”. If it’s making a noise that people are rejoicing to, then we are told to “rejoice with them that rejoice”.

Back in the eighties, I worked for a family-run Christian company who’s Church was entirely instrument-free. The foreman was the area Evangelist down there in the "Bible-belt". I got to know them well over a few years while there, and while they were not “Pentecostal”, the Lord pointed out to me as to just how I could really be sure there WASN’T Pentecostals somewhere rejoicing in worship this way? We have no choice, we must “comprehend”.

Love to celebrate!

I think Psalm 150 says it all!
I read it and my heart fills up and seems to want to explode with praise to the Father :amen:

Psalm 150
1 Praise the Lord!

Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heaven!
2 Praise him for his mighty works;
praise his unequaled greatness!
3 Praise him with a blast of the ram’s horn;
praise him with the lyre and harp!
4 Praise him with the tambourine and dancing;
praise him with strings and flutes!
5 Praise him with a clash of cymbals;
praise him with loud clanging cymbals.
6 Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord!

Praise the Lord!
