  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We finally saw Hamilton last night. The national touring company is in town for a 3 week stint. It's a powerful show. It's actually more like an opera, than the typical musical. There are a lot of words, but little regular spoken dialogue. Most of it is singing or rapping. The rhymes are very clever, and many of the lines contain intricate internal rhymes. But some of the rhythms are fast and if you don't attune your hearing and listen closely, you'll miss a lot. I'm not a fan of rap, but this was extremely well done. The songs are set to different musical styles for the different characters. Aaron Burr's music is jazzy/bluesy. King George makes a couple of appearances singing musical comedy numbers. Hamilton's songs are more ballad-like. The clip is a chorus and duet piece where Hamilton and his wife Eliza are mourning the death of their son who was killed, ironically, in a duel. Very pretty song.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who played Hamilton also wrote the story, the lyrics, and the music. It took him 7 years, but that's still an amazing achievement. The guy is a major league talent. I'd definitely like to see the show again. I know I'd pick up many more details that I missed.

I've been curious about it, but I'm afraid I would come away more irritated than anything - that it would appear to me Hamilton was merely appropriated for this view or that. Plus, I doubt anyone in my circle would be interested, and it's no fun to go by yourself.
