  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mods, if there is a better location for the thread, please move.

October is here!

I love your feedback on the halloween issue. Should christians celebrate it?

We've not celebrated it for years, but I'll be doing something a bit different this year. I'm going to go out trick r treat'n with the kids. Then we'll come home and eat candy and have an evening bible study. Im going to use it at as an opportunity to study the origins and history of death in the Bible. We'll also study what the Bible has to say about Satan, Angels (fallen and holy), and the occult. Pumpkin pie will also be in there somewhere.

Halloween has always confounded me as a christian. I've not been very clear on how to deal with it. I certainly didn't want to be judgmental about it toward my neighbors, so we always gave out candy. I then did some in-depth study on the holiday and found out some interesting things—primarily its american roots. The rest of the world is fairly ignorant about it. And its roots in ancient pagan rituals are a bit tenuous I discovered.

But the way I look at it, why let such a fun holiday go by? Why not use it? Physical death is very important in Christian theology. There is a very real sense in which we can celebrate it.

Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.”

And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

Without physical death, we could never become bodily united with God! Physical death releases us from one contract, so we can enter into a new one. The way I look at it, we've christianized the Dec. 25th holiday, why not this one? And it does have christian roots. Halloween literally means holy evening.

Now, I fully respect those whose consciences don't allow them to do what I'm doing. I hope this thread doesn't get combative and judgmental. I would love your thoughts and feedback, regardless of where you stand on this issue.

There is a Christian perspective on Halloween, which is a secular holiday. The Christian tradition is celebrating all Saints day, remembering all those who have gone before us.

Yes, which is November 1st right?

Hey, why try to make a Christian holiday out of one that clearly isn't. Why not join Germany on October 31st and celebrate, REFORMATION DAY!! It's much more fun, interesting and important to study and learn about that anyway!!

reformation-day-germany.jpg

Reformation Day is a public holiday in five states in Germany on
Oct. 31 each year to remember the religious Reformation in
Europe. It commemorates when German monk and theologian
Martin Luther’s proposals were nailed on the doors of a church in 1517.
This event was the start of religious and social changes in Europe.

Halloween is Satan's day to infect and program, wire and condition young children with deceit and sorcery, witchcraft and the occult!

I respect your views. I disagree with them. We simply have some innocent fun and candy and a chance to meet and greet the neighbors without bowing down and worshipping satan even once. ;)

Well, I guess my point is, it doesn't have to be. I'm not going to deny though, that the occult is celebrated on this day. Not that it's worshipped, but it's sort of romanticized. It's not practiced in a real sense, but rather enjoyed as entertainment. Death is also a big theme. Yards are decorated with hanging bodies. Costumes with knives and arrows going through heads. This was always my concern. It's a very deep tradition in america. It is what it is. It's probably going to persist.

The question is, how do we handle it? Turn out the porch light? Or do we hand out gospel tracts instead of candy? Or do we just enjoy it, not taking any of the symbolism too seriously?

I see it as an opportunity. The Bible has much to say about death and the occult. What better day to study it? What better day to study it, while enjoying free candy?

I love horror movies. Hannibal Lecter, Michael Meyers and Jason Voorhees are among my favorite characters ever. Anyone who knows me personally knows I have a very morbid sense of humor. These masks on this website are epic to me
Pro Silicone Masks™ « Composite Effects | Custom Theatrical Props, Special Makeup Effects, Silicone Masks, Foam Latex Appliances, Mold Making & Casting, Animatronics, Model Sculpting
and if I had the money I'd gladly buy one. I am a horrid nutcase. . .
BUT it doesn't dominate my life, Christ will always be my main focus. Does liking horror make anyone any less or more Christian??

Does it make one less of a christian?? Even a christian walking in a season of sin, is no less saved than one walking in victory. It's a meaningless distinction. The only question I have for myself in regard to halloween, is whether or not I'm within God's will. If it's true you're a "horrid nutcase," that's something to take a serious look at.

. . it's called hyperbole. Just sayin'
And me liking horror isn't a sin, it's simply entertainment. I find it funny that thousands of people go see and admire movies like SAW or Nightmare On Elm Street but get all offended because I'm listening to Babykiller by Devourment. I don't actually go out & kill infants nor do I advocate it. I enjoy horror because I find it entertaining, nothing more or less.

I was merely speaking to your hyperbole. I figured it was, just pointing out that even if it wasn't, you wouldn't be less of a christian. By our natures we fall into seasons sin. That's not the issue at all.

Is watching gratuitous horror films sin? Not per se, I guess I would have to admit. Yet, I don't get why a christian would get entertainment out of it. But ultimately I have to be careful, because it's going to come down to a matter of taste. My favorite film of 2005 was the Exorcism of Emily Rose, based the the true story of Anneliese Michel, and allegedly possessed girl from Germany. It was a very thought provoking courtroom drama, dealing with science and religion. And it was quite emotionally disturbing, which is amazing considering there were no real special effects. The acting was phenomenal. And the message of the film was very edifying.

Compare that to Jason, Freddie and Michael, and there's not comparison. Those're just death and and torture for fun (at least as far as I can recall from 20 years ago).

But can I say you're in sin? As tempting as it is, I cannot say with any certainty. Hope that makes sense.
