  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Not that I'm an expert or anything...
This looks a lot like the original movie. It seems to have a greater emphasis on the dance/music numbers.
It looks like another unnecessary remake to me. But my wife likes this type of thing, so I'll probably see it with her.
I still haven't gotten to see all the cool guy movies this summer!
Oh, well!

What? How in hell do you get the idea that Travolta looks like Divine?

Na, Travolta doesn't look like Divine in the 1988 Hairspray. :p

Wife and I saw it yesterday. A cute, upbeat film. I liked the early 60s look to it, with the old cars, and the sets, and costumes. (One really funny scene is in a bar, where two pregnant women are smoking and drinking martinis. :D )

We saw the musical on Broadway a few years ago. Some plot elements were slightly changed for the movie. John Travolta was actually pretty convincing as a woman--but still, after seeing Harvey Fierstein as Edna, no one else can really play that role.

The Phantom of the Opera movie is awful. It is a completely literal translation from stage to screen, and as such DRAGS AND DRAGS AND DRAGS. Apart from somewhat stunning visuals, that movie sucked big time. A huge disappointment.

I've heard that the stage production of Phantom of the Opera is good, but I haven't seen it. I just hated the movie version because it was literally word-for-word (and song-for-song). Movies and theatre are very different mediums, and they cannot be exactly the same! Thus, what didn't work on the screen probably works really well on stage. So if you're interested in seeing the stage production, then I urge you to do so. Just stay far, far away from the movie musical version!
