Hades is Grave

Comparing the Septuagint to the Masoretic, in the Old Testament. The word Hades in the Septuagint is the grave in the Masoretic text. So therefore the correct translation into English would be "grave."

Matthew 11:23
And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

Hades ( /ˈheɪdiːz/; from Greek ᾍδης (older form Ἀϝίδης), Hadēs, originally Ἅιδης, Haidēs or Άΐδης, Aidēs (Doric Ἀΐδας Aidas), meaning "the unseen") was the ancient Greek god of the underworld. The genitive ᾍδου, Haidou, was an elision to denote locality: "[the house/dominion] of Hades". Eventually, the nominative came to designate the abode of the dead.

In Greek mythology, Hades is the oldest male child of Cronus and Rhea. According to myth, he and his brothers Zeus and Poseidon defeated the Titans and claimed rulership over the cosmos, ruling the underworld, air, and sea, respectively; the solid earth, long the province of Gaia, was available to all three concurrently.

Hades was also called "Plouton" (Greek: Πλούτων, gen.: Πλούτωνος, meaning "Rich One"), a name which the Romans Latinized as Pluto. The Romans would associate Hades/Pluto with their own chthonic gods, Dis Pater and Orcus. The corresponding Etruscan god was Aita. Symbols associated with him are the Helm of Darkness, the bident and the three-headed dog, Cerberus.

As we all know the bible uses many parables. There is no real Hell, that word was put into scriptures by the Gnostic Pagans. Words like grave, pit, and Gehenna were replaced with the word hell. Those who are condemned to destruction never return. They are cut off for all eternity, never to live again.

The number of times "Hell" appears in the English Bible

The word hell was not originally in the Greek, Hebrew, or Aramaic text, as the so called biased translators have tried to establish it as scripture; but they were not good enough to cover up the reality of what God is saying. The source of this word hell and the concept of eternal torture is not Christian, but Pagan. You can find it in Babylon, in Greece, and especially Rome. But if you dig a little bit deeper you will see that it is bad translations that have infected this doctrine of Damnation in scriptures. As a matter of fact, scripture teaches the opposite.

Why did Jesus describe Hades as a place of fiery torment in Luke 16, then? Parable or not, Jesus wouldn't lie about the conditions of a man going to a place of punishment.

Secondly, Acts 2:31 is a quote from Psalms 16:10. Acts 2:31 uses the word hell for "hades," whereas Psalms uses hell for "sheol." Same place.

Korah was swallowed up alive by "the pit", which was translated from sheol. The pit described in the old testament is the same "bottomless pit" described in Revelations. It's the same hell, same realm of the dead.

Yahshua never once used the word "Hell." The word Hell was placed there by the translators of the bible. Yahshua used the word "Gehenna." Gehenna: Referring to the Valley of Hinnom, or Gehenna which is the city dump outside the walls of Jerusalem. According to Archaeologist, there is no evidence to support that Gehenna was a place for burning garbage. There was however lots of Potsherds found.

Jeremiah 19:2
and go out to the Valley of Ben Hinnom, near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. There proclaim the words I tell you...

Catholic Gnosticism.
The attitude of the Catholic Church toward paganism is best summed up by Pope Gregory the Great, in his words to a missionary: “You must not interfere with any traditional belief or religious observance that can be harmonized with Christianity.”

Not only were the Congregations divided by Gnosticism, but enticed by philosophy and paganism also, and there were geographic divisions as well.
Pope Gregory 540 – 12 March 604.

Just a reminder that it was the Catholic Church that canonized scripture.

The Rich Man And Lazarus With Commentary.
Luke 16:19. "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
Wealth, comfort, poverty, and suffering have nothing to do with a person’s salvation.

22"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
The word messenger is replaced with the word angel. And assuming that this is a parable, there would be no need for Lazarus to be carried to Abraham, and before the resurrection. As for being in Hell and torment and agony; that contradicts the verse that says the dead know nothing. It also is a contradiction where scripture says that Yahwah kills the condemned. In regards to the water on the finger; that would evaporate before it even got to a person. It also contradicts where God said “you will surly die.”

25"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'

Again I say to you that wealth and poverty has nothing to do with the resurrection of the righteous. There is one truth in all of this, and that there is a chasm that has been set in place; and that is called death of the condemned, which are killed by Yahwah. There is no life for them afterward.

27"He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'

29"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'

30" 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
31"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "

These are obviously the words of a dim wit, and not the words of an ancient being. No place in these verses is credit given to Yahwah, but only to Moses and the prophets; which would be unlike Yahshua to exclude Yahwah in matters of life and death.

Hell is a pagan belief and part of the Pagan religion. Why would Yahshua use a nonexistent biblical teaching for which he never explains afterward? Before the return from Babylon, Judaism never taught the concept of hell. After the return from Babylon the Hellenistic and Kabbalistic Jews began to introduce Hell into Judaism.

Yahshua never identified the story as a parable, and never explained the relevance as he did in other legitimate parables.
Yahshua, being an ancient being full of knowledge and wisdom, would have had the good sense to explain the new concept. Obviously the story of “The Rich Man and Lazarus” are the words of some man introducing the Pagan concept of Hell.

If it is true that there will be people ALIVE in Hell, Then God lied, and the Serpent told the truth. The word "Hell" was added to scripture replacing the words grave, pit, and Gehenna? God is not a liar.

Punishment

Matthew 25:46
“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

2 Peter 2:9
if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.

Jude 1:7
In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

Revelation 17:1
One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits by many waters.

Revelation 14:10
they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be (tormented / punished or rubbed out) with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy messengers and of the Lamb.

Revelation 14:11
And the smoke of their (torment / punishment or being rubbed out) will rise forever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”

Revelation 20:10
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be (tormented / punished or rubbed out) day and night forever and ever.

Basanizo / Basanismos

In Revelation 14:10, the word “basanizo” is translated as “tormented” (past tense verb)

In Revelation 14:11, the word “basanismos” is translated as “torment” (noun)

Revelation 20:10, the word “basanizo” is translated as “tormented” (past tense verb)

These words come from the root “basanos,” which is defined by Strong’s as “a touchstone.”

Webster defines the word “touchstone” as: “1. A stone by which metals are examined; a black, smooth, glossy stone… 2. Any test or criterion by which the qualities of a thing are tried; as money, the touchstone of common honesty.”

You will find this interesting, considering that the definition of the Greek word that was translated as “torment,” not only has nothing to do with eternal conscious torment, but it is actually a process that tests purity. So we can see that to be tormented in these verses is compared to being rubbed out upon a touchstone.

Touch·stone

noun

noun: touchstone; plural noun: touchstones

a piece of fine-grained dark schist or jasper formerly used for testing alloys of gold by observing the color of the mark that they made on it. A standard or criterion by which something is judged.

Metal was tested by rubbing it out on the stone.

As a modern day term the words rubbed out means the person was killed.

A person who is eternally (rubbed out) is dead forever.

I believe Gehenna was a place where parents sacrificed their children which would explain Jesus' comments on such a issue. Then again, that might be just a myth like the rubbish pile.

I'd also like to add on the point of Revelation 20:14 that it suggests that Hades was destroyed by the lake of fire and verse before says that all the dead were now out of it. Due to the fact that Sheol and Hades are equivalents to the best of my knowledge, it would be apt to conclude that Sheol will still be in affect until the lake of fire and thus, we'll probably being going to Sheol first rather than Heaven (unless we died for the faith based on Revelation 6:9).

Really Interesting posts, CherubRam.

Sheol never, ever, means Hell of Hades. Never

I meant in the respect of translation rather than their actual similarity in the context of their function/s. Nevertheless, I'll concede I know very little about the subject compared to you and please educate me considering you have some competence in this area.

A million years from now, a lot of people are going to say, "Gosh! I guess there really is a hell."

That's the nice thing about being alive, folks can deny things they don't want to believe in . . . including God. But one day the bills are going to come due.

Comparing the Septuagint to the Masoretic, in the Old Testament. The word Hades in the Septuagint is the grave in the Masoretic text. So therefore the correct translation into English would be "grave."

That's true, death, hell and the grave are used synonymously in the Old Testament. That's one of the things that I find striking about Jesus, not only does he describe an afterlife, he provides details you won't get anywhere else.

Hades: "the region of departed spirits of the lost" (but including the blessed dead in periods preceding the ascension of Christ). It has been thought by some that the word etymologically meant "the unseen" (from a, negative, and eido, "to see"), but this derivation is questionable; a more probable derivation is from hado, signifying "all-receiving." It corresponds to "Sheol" in the OT. (Vine's G86)

You can get a resurrection from the OT but something like 'the region of the departed spirits of the lost', not so easy. This there is this puzzling explanation of the word 'Hades', from the Vine's Dictionary:

The word is used four times in the Gospels, and always by the Lord, Mat 11:23; 16:18; Luk 10:15; 16:23; it is used with reference to the soul of Christ, Act 2:27, 31; Christ declares that He has the keys of it, Rev 1:18; in Rev 6:8 it is personified, with the signification of the temporary destiny of the doomed; it is to give up those who are therein, Rev 20:13, and is to be cast into the lake of fire, ver. 14. (Vine's G86)
Notice Jesus is the only one who talks about Hades, perhaps because he was the only one who knew about it at the time.
