  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If you love guns and are proud to own them and shoot them, share your thoughts here. Anti-gun people are welcome to post as well. Wouldn't be much of a conversation without an opposing viewpoint.

Here's a pic of a Glock 23, the gun I currently own and carry.

And here are the sights I'm having installed either tomorrow or next week. Gotta have the Night Sights.

And here's a picture of the next gun I'm thinking of buying:

The Bersa Thunder in .380. I think it'll be better for concealed carry as Arizona is mostly a t-shirt and shorts state, it makes concealing the 23 very difficult.

When I was shopping for an auto I just didn't like the feel of the Glocks~like holding a brick IMO. I understand Robar does custom work to melt the edges. I did like the Beretta and Browning HiPower~Beretta won 'cause I didn't want an SA.

I'm a big guy, and can carry the Beretta with no prob 3 seasons~summer I break out the S&W .38. I actually got the .32 Tomcat for CC but prefer the little 5 shot..

Size isn't as much a limitation as you might think. Are you looking to start out with rifle, shotgun, or handgun?

Ah, so you're one of those 1911 fanatics, eh? LOL Everytime I try and wear the 23 under a t-shirt you can tell I'm carrying a gun. LOL The instructor of the CCW course actually discouraged us from open carry. He said you're just asking for trouble.

a handgun...

The best advice I can give is for you to go to a gun range and rent some handguns and find out what you like. I was initially gonna buy the Glock 19 9mm, but chose the 23, because of the bigger caliber in the same size gun.

I am definately a 1911 fan. However, I haven't bought one yet.

I have a .45 SA revolver, and a little NEF 9 shot .22 revolver. I used to have a Ruger .45 longcolt SA with a barrel that reached into tomorrow...but I let my mom shoot it, she love dit and bought it from me that day.

As for long guns I have:
.22 pump action rifle
.22 (that my mom learned to shoot on
.243
.30-30
7 MM
12 guage pump

I don't know if I want to go get an 1911, or another auto next or not. I am thinking about looking into balck powder and I'd like to start bow hunting.

 No I don't have a 1911~my first SA auto would be a Hi Power over a 1911, though I did qualify Expert in the Marine Corps with a very worn out .45.

We're ony concealed carry here in PA~havent' tried the shoulder rigs~all hip/pocket carry for me. Guess I'm working on 11 years with the license. In PA there is no class or testing~we're a "Shall Issue" state; as long as the sheriff can't find anything they have to issue the license. When they started this people predicted the "Wild West" would return; been quite the opposite in regards to crime on our town:thumbsup:

Ok, this is what i have in mind...something not heavy, inconspicuous, and something i'd use (because by that time i'd be a sharp-shooter, right ;) ) to disable someone, not kill them, just shoot them strategically....and to practice with.

I work for the police dept and i don't think it's necessary to always shoot to kill...i do believe however that if one owns a gun and plans on using it, that they better be the best they can be in handling it.

I have a different take on defense then what has been presented so far. The choice of using deadly force is a serious one. If a crisis has come to the point of having to fire the weapon, then the primary objective is to stop the perpetrator. The idea of "winging" the person is not even an option; to expect one's mind and motor skills to be so adept as to only aim for a shoulder or leg or arm is not even a reasonable ambition. You've decided to use deadly force; you aim at the largest target~center of mass~and shoot and continue to shoot until the person is stopped.

There's an old saying:

Anyone worth shooting once is worth shooting twice

It's not a flip statement; it reflects the seriousness of the application of deadly force. If you are not of the mind then you may want to reconsider the gun. Granted there have been plenty of crimes foiled simply by brandishing a firearm; however the hard criminal is going to know by your actions whether you are serious about that weapon.

What? Can't afford a PPKS? Bersa is a nice gun, but not exactly in the WOW class of a Glock. If you're thinking of a small shooter go with the Walther P22. The most incredible gun on earth. In either barrel length the thing shoots same hole groups all day long with any round you feed through it. (Not standard velocity though.) I have never seen one jam with a decent cartridge or not.

And if you haven't seen what a .22 CCI Stinger can do, go out and look. KUH-BANG!! The .380 is doing what 700FPS? I don't own any guns at the moment, but I had one on my hip and a rifle in my hand just about every day from the age of 12 to 16.

Actually i'm thinking about legal issues. And criminals do not intimidate or scare me. As they think they've sized me up i've done the same with them, the gun would only be to halt whatever they're doing and to keep me safe-er, and to prevent actual death of anyone.

I honestly disagree about the deadly force. I understand where you are coming from, but a lot of 'shooting' happens because of panic, unpreparedness for that spur of the moment surprise that comes at ya right between the eyes, or just plain laziness or bad attitude.

But thanks for your perspective. I have zilch experience with guns. My perspective may change as i learn more.
