Murders on death row ( just like anyone else can choose to stop any appearls except the first one. Of course they rarely do, but they can and sometimes do.Many convictions are appealed. Murderers on death row go through a number of appeals, and do not stop until their last appeal is exhausted.
Throughout the trial, commentators said that Judge Merchan was conducting the trial in such a way that would make successful appeals virtually impossible. He even showed unusual deference to Trump, giving him several chances to control himself without throwing him into jail for violating the gag order. He treated him with kid gloves because he knew Trump's lawyers were taking copious notes for the inevitable appeal.
It has been really hard for me to see the unbelievable corruption of Justices Alito and Thomas, who sit arrogantly in court denying any accountability, but the hard work of DA Bragg, Judge Merchan, and the NY justice system have restored my faith that in some parts of the country at least justice is working.
