Tonight in my history class I learned that all christian religions other then Catholic and Orthodox are protestant. Heres the reasoning: The protestant religion as we call it didnt like what the Catholics were doing with their religion so they protested and made up their new religion that was supposed to be better then then the Catholic faith. Thus we call them Protestants, and then after that the Puritans as we call them (also Calvinists) tried to purify the Protestant church so we now call them Puritans. Then there are the Separatists that didnt like what the Puritans were doing so they separated and are now called Separatists.

This is what I learned in History tonight. I would like to meet with my professor and learn more about the early church as I dont know that much. My guess is also that she doesn't know Jesus and she could be quite the challenge. I always did love a challenge. Anywho i just thought id throw this out there for some comments

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Orthodox are not classified as Protestant. They split from the Catholic church before the Protestant thing happened. There are also some other Christian churches that were never part of the Roman empire that would be neither Catholic or Protestant. And religions outside of Christianity would not be Protestant.

Just as an FYI - most protestants would be very much against the assertion that they made up 'their new religion'. The assertion of the reformers was that the catholic church had diverged from the scriptures, and the protestants were just resetting the clock to the past, 'reforming' the church to where it was supposed to be, and setting aside the abuses. No 'new' religion, just faithfulness to the the scriptures. The reformers very much supported the early church councils, and earlier catholic writers such as St. Augustine, and Turretin. They were also on the same page as that very early and well known writer, the apostle Paul - by grace through faith have you been saved, not through works, lest any man should have cause for boasting - it is a gift of God. :^)

The calvinists were part of the original reformation, rather than a delay until the Puritans - Luther, Calvin, Ferrell, Beza, etc. were contemporaries. It was said by Luther that if it weren't for some of the differences in observing the Lord's supper, the presbyterian and lutheran churches would have been the same.

Generally, the puritans and separatists were all calvinists - if you read the theological books of the time, they were truly concerned not only for outward obedience, but for also having a true heart. They weren't perfect (just as today, there were some oddballs), but there are some excellent works from the period.

It is generally accepted that the three branches of Christianity are Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant. The Catholic and Orthodox churches split apart in A.D. 1054. Any church that split directly from the Catholic church or can trace its ancestry back to a church that split from Catholicism is considered Protestant. That pretty much includes all other denominations. There may be a few exceptions, but they're pretty rare.

Church history is a great thing to study. I love learning about how denominations came about and what other denominations they emerged from. It can tell you a lot about why it holds its doctrines. I would encourage anyone to learn more about it, especially early church history (the first few centuries after Christ) when the creeds were being written and the Bible was being put together.
