10 Years later, and some of my fav bands today came out of the "grunge" scene.
I remember (and I was very young) the whole grunge scene, and all the amazing artists who came out of that time. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden.... wow I still listen to them today.

Anyone else still a big fan of all these bands?
I can remember when Pearl Jam realeased "Ten"... such a great cd. One of my fav vidoes of all time is from that cd (Jeremy).... so much anger...

great great bands...

That music was just about all I listened to for a couple of years. '93-'96

That just inspired me to make a thread about it... I wasnt allowed to listen to that stuff when I was younger.
I remember I wanted Nirvana's live unplugged cd and my parents wouldnt let me get it :p
But I got into it in the later part of the 97-on... when I was allowed to make my own decisions :)
Ive been a huge fan since.

Ive also loved Smashing Pumpkins... and I really got into Beck... who I think is totally hot

Grunge is definitely at the top of my list. My favorite grunge/alternative artists (in order...best first) are: Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, Candlebox, Pearl Jam, Marcy Playground, Live, Toadies, Jane's Addiction, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Seven Mary Three, and Semisonic. (I know that some of these artists are post-grunge, but I thought that they were mellow enough to be included.)

In my opinion, Layne Staley's voice ruled Seattle...especially with their softer songs. However, there aren't many grunge bands that I don't like (come to think of it...I can't think of one!)

What irks me is how everyone gives Kurt too much credit. Nirvana certainly wasn't the first grunge band, and they certainly weren't the best. Nirvana didn't have the best vocalist, best guitarist, best lyricist, or best overall songs. Simply because "Smells Like Teen Spirit" became a huge hit, everyone jumped on the bandwagon.

Totally... I think my fav artist to come out of that era would have to be Pearl Jam... Ive awlays been a fan. I just love Eddie's voice. Black.. Jeremy... nothingman... courderoy... all such reat songs.
Im also a really big soundgarden and stone temple pilots fan... theres always been something abotu Scott Weiland that has drawn me to that group. The first song I heared by them was Big Bang Baby... and I was like whoa.. they are amazing... Ive been a fan ever since.

I lived by the "grunge" scene for a very important, formative part of my youth. I'm still a huge pumpkinhead, and like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden pretty well, too. Nirvana got too much credit all because Kurt committed suicide. I didn't think he was that great of a poet/musician/lyricist. Billy Corgan and Eddie Vedder wrote better lyrics and music, and Chris Cornell coud kick all their butts in a singing competition.

Back then, I got really upset about Bush, STP, etc, because they sounded like rip-offs, but I can see some artistic merit in them today. I dont' dislike them as passionately as I did back then.

I never really got into Bush at all.
but Ive always liked STP... Im not sure if Iw ould have really considered them "grunge" but they kinda errupeted after the grunge scene kinda died down... towards the end of it... so I guess they kinda got tagged as ripoffs... but still... :)

Wow I dont think Ive ever had a thread grow so fast :p

Thanks guys!

It's the whole dead rock star effect... Pearl Jam and Soundgarden are my two favorites out the that group.

Grunge didn't die with Nirvana, but I would put that as the climax of that era. It began to slowly fade after his death. I know that Pearl Jam still tours. I love 'Do the Evolution'. It's one of my all time favorite songs. I love the video too.

It's funny; I don't think he gets enough credit now, because there's been a big backlash from their popularity. It is forgotten that he wrote quite a few great songs, aside from "Smells Like Teen Spirit." It's also forgotten what an unbe-friggin-lievable record "Smells Like Teen Spirit" really was.

Hey guys!

A lot of the bands you've been mentioning were/are great! I was a huge fan of the Pumpkins, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam etc, but now I don't listen to them as I did in the past. I saw Bush and the Pumpkins live in London. They were great concerts...absolutely awesome

I use to love grunge with a passion. And like Breetai, Soundgarden & Pearl Jam were my favs. Especially when they collaborated for Temple of the Dog.

I was never a big fan of Nirvana. There was just too much undeserved hype surrounding them. Grunge didn't die with the death of Kurt...it was already on it's way out.

Oh yeah, Eddie Vedder is amazing (and Mike McCready isn't half bad on the guitar ;) ). My favorite songs by PJ are "Black" and "Yellow Ledbetter". I've heard people say that the guitar part for Yellow Ledbetter is a ripoff of "Little Wing" by Hendrix, but I just don't see that. Black contains some of my favorite lyrics of all time. When I hear a song like that, I wonder why people place Vedder behind Cobain. (And now my bitter hands/cradle broken glass/oh what was everything?) IMO, Black was the tops for them lyrically and Yellow Ledbetter was their pinnacle musically and emotionally. (Just my opinion, as you stated, Jeremy could give that a run for its money.)

Yeah, I'm into Soundgarden because of Cornell's voice and the musicianship. I particularly like "Fell on Black Days". That song shows that Cornell could pen amazing lyrics too. However, I never liked Soundgarden as much as some of the others because I felt that their albums contained too much filler. But still, amazing at their best. Stone Temple Pilots was the band that really got me into grunge. (I'm only 19, so I missed out on all the good concerts) Interstate Love Song, Vaseline, Plush, Creep, Dead and Bloated, Sex Type Thing, Wonderful, Big Empty, Trippin on a Hole in a Paper Heart...I could just go on forever. I think Weiland has spent his life in the shadow of other grunge vocalists, but when I hear Plush, I wonder if it gets much better.

No argument there! Smashing Pumpkins took center stage after Kurt passed. I love their progression of albums. People didn't think that they could top Siamese Dream, and all of a sudden they release a double cd! Lately I've been listening to "Tonight, Tonight" a lot. Disarm used to be my fav. song of theirs. What is truely amazing about Smashing Pumpkins is the amount of emotion in Billy Corgan's voice.

Jane's Addiction is an acquired taste, but "Jane Says" is beautiful. I didn't like Alice in Chains for a long time because "Man in the Box" was played constantly on the radio. However, their acoustic albums and their unplugged session blew me away. So many amazing songs...

Nah, grunge died with Layne Staley ;) . I think that Nirvana was so popular that many people fell away from grunge music after his death. In my opinion, there were too many people wrapped up in Cobain and not in the music of the other bands. It's not that I don't like Nirvana (although I used to despise them), it is just that they don't compare with the other bands. My fav. Nirvana songs are "Heart-shaped Box", "Pennyroyal Tea", and "Rape Me". They definitely improved with time.

Does anyone else like Candlebox's self-titled cd?

Yeah, I can definitely see that side too. I agree that "Nevermind" had some really good songs on it, but it also had some horrible ones. I'm not positive about this, but I think that Kurt didn't like the album.

Anyone else think that Courtney Love either killed Kurt or had him killed?

Maybe.

May I once again reiterate my love of Pearl Jam (top band, top songs) and even though I never really listened to Soundgarden, I agree Chris Cornell has a champion voice. I never really thought of Live as true grunge, but they completely rock as well. I have an old guitar mag where there was a pic of Ed with hair on the cover and I struggled to recognise him!

I was going into my early teens when the grunge /nirvana/ era really started to come into swing. So to say that it was a large part of my musical upbringing, would be an understatement.

What was also great about it, for the musically inclined... grunge was also pretty easy to play... I mean, learn how to play a few power chords on the guitar and you can probably play most every Nirvana song in existance :p

But I was a big fan of Nirvana, Pearl Jam (even though Kurt and Eddie Vedder didn't like each other so much, or so I heard), Soundgarden etc... I remember the first time I saw the video for "Black Hole Sun"... I was hooked from that point on.

I wouldn't quite classify them as grunge, but somebody mentioned The Smashing Pumpkins... I was, and still am, a huge pumpkins fan. Siamese Dream was a great cd, and I thought Melancholy was great too... I was so upset when I heard they were breaking up.... and come to find out now that it was partially the guitarists fault (that's what billy corgan said in a recent interview). Although I still don't know how I feel about the whole Billy Corgan/Courtney Love fling from a while back... still kinda gives me the willies :p

All in all though... the grunge era was great while it lasted... I know it gave this teenage (at the time) white boy a reason to get into a mosh pit ;)
I really don't think that the grunge era ended at any specific moment, but yea Kurt's death certainly attributed to it... but I think it was just like any era in music... it all comes to an end to make way for the new breed. I mean, could you imagine if the 80's style had continued? Scary...scary thought... I listened to my fair share of Poison, Motley Crue, etc... as the next guy, and occasionally I'll pop a cd in... but I am kinda glad that era is over. (maybe it's just because I could never do the 'big hair, makeup' look)

Although... this whole step back to the grunge area reminds me of a funny quote that I heard:

"I think Seattle's herion addiction can be summed up in it's national landmark, a 20-story tall needle"

I have no idea. Is there evidence to support that?

And who is that in your avatar, btw?
