Okay, sometimes I see Protestants going around criticizing "Catholic" practices, that Protestants would never do. I just thought it would fun to go through these "Catholic only" practices that I curiously grew up with. ;)

So I would like to dedicate this thread to the traditional Protestants, where we can come and share pictures/experiences and explain practices. :)

Here's a picture of the church I grew up in.

Yes, that is an altar :D We would recieve communion by going up, kneeling, praying, and the pastors would give the wafer and the wine to us, thats right, no crackers and grape juice. ;) Along the sides are stain glass windows, and in the balcony is a real pipe organ.

Great pictures Lotar!!

Yea, and confirmwhat???? :D
Thanks

Confirmation is basically when you confirm your baptism and accept the teachings of the Lutheran Church, after which you may partake in communion.
So, we took classes for 2 years, where we learned doctrine and theology. At the end we had to pick a subject, write an essay on it, and then give a speach on it, in front of the congregation. We then would talk one on one with the pastor, and he would ask us questions. It's actually quite a big deal.

the Lutheran Church is very good at teaching doctrine and theology
I think that it is. That's what it's probably best at.

I thought those robes were pretty cool when I got to wear them. I felt important. lol
I don't know about Lotar, but we had to go to confirmation classes once a week for two years during the school years of grade seven and eight. Then we were questioned about our faith and our knowledge of the Lutheran church's doctrine.

Terri, I like your sig. It's cute!

Yep, once a week for 7th and 8th grade.
Get to feel all important in the robe and the ceremony, and then there's the party and gifts afterwards ;)

I tell you though, you have a real respect for communion after that.

Here is a picture of a procession I got from the ELCA website.

That was from an ELCA site? It looks like it's from a Catholic site! lol

I got some pretty nice stuff from my confirmation. Lots of relatives came for it too. I was so sick of having my picture taken...

That's the truth!

Did your pastor quote a Bible verse for you during your confirmation? I still remember mine.

Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.

Cool pic, we usually only had those on special occasions, like Christmas eve.
We hold a procession every Sunday, usually only the Choir and the accolytes along with the person who carries the Cross. Here is a pic of Bethel Ev. Lutheran Church. It also resembles the "OLD" church styles, romanesque. It's floorplan is that of a Cross too. My Church is pretty old school, though; I like it.

That's cool. How big is your congregation?

Me old church. I might start going back again soon, right now I attend a Calvary Chapel, but I'm switching back to a Lutheran church soon.

The Church has 300 baptized members, but a regular attendance of 160 people. We aren't the biggest Lutheran Congregation in town, but we have a good pressence.

I am glad to hear you are comming back to a Lutheran congregation. We are doing some great new things in our Church, and we are growing.

I was wondering if you could post a typical liturgy of your service; both calvary and Lutheran? (by this I mean a quick run down of how things are done in a typical service; even though every service is different.)

Calvary attempts to prevent tradition, which I disagree with very much. So, communion is random, they have gone nearly half the year without it before and the two services in a row

Basically the service is like this. A song or two, then a prayer, sometimes a passage from the bible is read. Then there is a good 20 min of music, during which the offering is recieved, after a prayer. Then another prayer, and the message, which is usually about 30-40 minutes long. The message is almost always evangelistic, and an invitation is given at the end, sometimes an alter call.

At my old church there was the traditional LCMS liturgy, and then a sort of worship liturgy service. I usually attended the sunday school, and then my family left when I was a senior in HS.

I personally never wanted to leave (especially for a non-denom baptist style church). Since I have been reading a lot of theology this year, I have understood more and more that what I believe is too much diferent to stay, even if it does upset my parents. (I know, I know, I'm a grown man. I just like keeping the peace, if you know what I mean.)

DOH! I can't remember what my verse was  I have it written down somewhere...

Oh, when describing the church, I forgot about the kneelers in the pews, that way we could kneel for the prayers.
I like kneelers!!! Sadly my church doesn't have them, and being an ELCA church we don't generally kneel (sorta "Stand up, sit down, fight fight fight"), which I think that I would prefer it if we kneeled during the Confession of Sins. I think we should be humble when we do this, and standing isn't all too humble. Standing should be saved for joyous things like the Gloria, Nicene Creed, Sanctus, etc.

However, I am just a young upstart with crazy ideas. All in all the Lutheran Liturgy is pretty awesome. I really want to experience an Anglican Communion. If Polycarp or someone sees this, do they use the staffs in church? Or do they use them period? (I saw them using them sometimes on tv)
