Well- fevers in labor are always problematic, and tend to indicate infection of some sort--the diagnosis can be complicated by the epidural fevers...but since there is no way to know for sure the cause of a fever in labor- it is treated as possible infection.

As it is - it is one of the risk factors given by the CDC which indicates the routine use of prophylactic intrapartum antibiotic use to fight GBS disease. when the risk factor protocol is in place. ( There are two separate protocols)

I tested positive for GBS last time, got the antibiotics via IV last time, what a pain!!! Now I'm looking into herbal treatments.

Another off-shoot problem of giving antibiotics during pregnancy &/or labor is the distinct possibility of the baby developing thrush (overgrowth of yeast in the system). This can make breastfeeding more difficult because it hurts and the baby gets really gassy from the yeast.

One of my past midwives said that if I tested positive at 36 wks, we could treat me (with something~ antibiotics or herbal methods) and then test me again at nearly term to see if my body had gotten rid of it. The other option was to wait until after the baby was born and test the baby then, to see if he/she had contracted it. Then we'd treat the baby. (I ended up testing negative, so we didn't have to deal with it, but I liked those options better than a mandatory IV during labor.)

I was diagnosed with this after my first child was born. I remember getting very sick and felt like I would die. I was freezing and felt very bad. My husband called the doctor and he told me to come in the next day. He gave me a shot in the rear--ouch! I don't think they knew much about it then (in 1989). Then, after I had my daughter in 1994, I got sick again. The doctors told me that I had a strep infection in my womb (????). They told me that it would happen every time I have a baby and that I should let my doctor know next time. I am pregnant now, due in April of 2007. I hope they can treat me before I get sick this time. I still don't know much about it.
