I could see placing Five Iron Frenzy in the top 20, but Relient K?!?!?! The greatest of all time?!?!?! I think I'm gonna be sick....

1. Resurrection/Rez Band is UNCONTESTED # 1. Everyone playing hard rock/heavy metal in the 80's took after them. Awesome band, awesome lyrics.

2. Petra. Very close # 2. 30+ years in ministry (and they were a ministry first and foremost) Uncompromising in their faith. Top selling Christian group of all time.

3. Newsboys. These guys deserve whatever accolades come their way. Uncompromising, even when other bands crossed over, watering down the message they never did despite the fact that they could have made more $$$ by doing so. These boys can rock and make wonderful praise CD's too !

You forget that not all of us are as old as you are and thus have not been listening to Christian music as long as you probably have. Someone who just started listening to Christian music within the last year or two is probably not going to say bands you would think of as the greatest.

I've only been listening to Christian music since November 2003 and if you listed some of the older bands I'd bet I probably haven't really heard much of or any of their songs.

I would never list Relient K as the greatest band of all time, but someone who is new to Christian music or really likes RK would think they are.

You're absolutely correct, which, in essence, sheds more light on the motive behind my post and compels me to submit that "someone who is new to Christian music" should probably avoid this thread altogether.

Maybe, but you and I both know that they won't. As long as this thread exists you will have people coming in here saying RK, Switchfoot, Casting Crowns, MercyMe, or whoever else is popular now is the best band ever because they are the best band that they've heard so far.

I voted for REZ earlier but then I'm biased since I lived with 'em at JPUSA back in the late 70's (darn but that makes me feel old!!)

If I were to vote for the most "influential" person I'ld have to go with the Grandaddy of Christian Rock Larry Norman. I once drove over 1,000 miles to see him play at C'Stone and it was worth every drop of gas!!

I don't think they should avoid this thread - that's pretty harsh, man. I'm interested in folks' opinions, myself, and am curoious to hear what people have to say. Besides, this a great place for someone new to Christian music to get an idea of what to listen to next.

You're off-base in your assertion that "this a great place for someone new to Christian music to get an idea of what to listen to next." The Greatest Christian Band of All Time thread? I disagree. Someone who is new to Christian music wouldn't have any idea who the greatest band is.

That would be like me strolling into the Jazz and Blues music forum- a genre that I am "new" to- finding a "Who's The Greatest Blues Guitarist of All Time" thread, and just naming the first guy that comes to mind because I happened to see his CD at the local Starbucks.

Perhaps people who get annoyed at those who disagree with them should avoid this thread altogether.

ApologetiX, That Christian Parody Band, all the way, yo!

ApologetiX 'cause they specialize in biblical parodies. They've been around for quite a while, and have a good track record under their belts. They've addressed all kinds of issues, end times, the Roman's Road, evolution, gettin' into Heaven. A person could get saved if they followed the lyrics in songs like "One Way," or "Roman's Road." They're very talented musicians, being able to mimic so many artists so well. Elvis, the Beatles, Linkin Park, Eminem. You name it, they've probably done it, almost to perfection.

I have not heard much from Rez, but I voted for them anyway. Not because they are my favorite band, but because they were instrumental in forming rock into what it is today. Therefore, they deserve to be in the top five if not number one.
Lets see...who has Relient K inspired? Well, they sure have created a nation of teeny-boppers. As far as their music goes, I must confess, I don't find them talented in the least.

You're off-base in your assertion that "this a great place for someone new to Christian music to get an idea of what to listen to next." The Greatest Christian Band of All Time thread? I disagree. Someone who is new to Christian music wouldn't have any idea who the greatest band is.

That would be like me strolling into the Jazz and Blues music forum- a genre that I am "new" to- finding a "Who's The Greatest Blues Guitarist of All Time" thread, and just naming the first guy that comes to mind because I happened to see his CD at the local Starbucks.

You're right. I was out of line, and I apologize - I was smart alec.

But I really do like hearing people's opinions, and don't like seing them discouraged from posting - even if the post is like the Switchfoot post above, it's better than "silence". I mean, it's so obvious that most of teh bands named certainly don't qualify - this time next year we'll see that some are just flash in the pan bands. And I stick to my guns about there being an educational opportunity here - if folks see bands listed, and see why they are listed, that they are unfamiliar with, it may help broaden their horizons.

ApologetiX, That Christian Parody Band, all the way, yo!

ApologetiX 'cause they specialize in biblical parodies. They've been around for quite a while, and have a good track record under their belts. They've addressed all kinds of issues, end times, the Roman's Road, evolution, gettin' into Heaven. A person could get saved if they followed the lyrics in songs like "One Way," or "Roman's Road." They're very talented musicians, being able to mimic so many artists so well. Elvis, the Beatles, Linkin Park, Eminem. You name it, they've probably done it, almost to perfection.

You're kidding, right? Good lyrics? I'll have to take your word on that. Since they are evangelizing, I'd at least give them credit for being upfront about their faith, if they take it into the bars and clubs, etc.

But "being able to mimic so many artists so well" has nothing to do with talent. Want talent? Come up with something original, and put it to lyrics, instead of b@stardizing songs already made famous by mainstream secular artists, then copping their songs and changing the lyrics. That's weak.
