  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I thought Journey was one of the best bands of the era...and then Steve Perry up and quit. :(
Yeah, that happened to a lot of great groups. Journey was one of the best. :(

The 80's and 90's imho were the decades when people began to come unhinged. Bad boys and bad girls became the norm. And we are still recovering. Some say it was the 60's but imho total depravity as we see it now didn't become mainstream until the 80's and 90's. Talented people succumbed to the drug epidemic, and some never recovered and some died. Good music groups broke up for various reasons. Two such R&B groups was Switch and DeBarge. Switch featured Bobby and Tommy DeBarge. DeBarge featured Bobby & Tommy DeBarge's siblings, El, Bunny,Chico, James,Randy and Marty. They all succumbed to drug addiction and Bobby died. It is a sad story, and some of them are recovering. Here is a tune by Switch that was really big on the R&B charts.Bobby DeBarge is doing the falsetto lead.

I was a musician back then and I'm amazed at how many musician friends I knew died early, in their '40's and '50's, from bad lifestyles, you know. I literally lost count at one point. I thank God for seeing me through.

Okay, the theme of this post is "Time". :)

Time after time was a very good tune. I think it was Cyndi Lauper's best. Here is one about seasons that I liked a lot. Sometimes I would cry because it was so true.

I hadn't heard this one before, but you can't help moving in time the instant it begins, eh? :D

Yes, praise God you are here, Chesterton. :)

That sounds interesting, that you were a musician back then. Would you like to tell us a little more? Don't have to...:) Just wondered what instruments you played...

I like Cyndi's song, Time after Time as well. Cyndi was over here to do a concert with Blondie not long ago.

Here is a song well known by most New Zealanders. They thrashed it on the radio when it came out and now my children's generation know it as well. It's one of our most beloved NZ songs. We all love it too. :D

This song was recorded by one of NZ's most prominent Maori singers, Prince Tui Teka. Sadly he has been gone a long time now, but this is my favourite song by him. He eventually gained permission to use the melody which was written by another composer in Indonesia and then a local Maori composer, Ngoi Pewhairangi, wrote a set of Maori lyrics for Prince Tui Teka. I was blessed to meet Ngoi Pewhairangi back in the day and she was a formidable woman who was extremely talented and dedicated to preserving Maori language and culture. I was also blessed to go to see Prince Tui Teka one time and he was so wonderful and had such a great sense of humour too. :)

Some years ago my eldest son gave me a cd of Prince Tui Teka's greatest hits. This is another fab song by him. Whoever made this vid did a great job too. :)

Well, when we use that phrase we're meaning they played the song on the radio over and over, like at least once every single hour for weeks at a time sort of thing, Chesterton. :D

Wow, I thought it meant sort of the opposite. When I posted that Captain and Tennille, you said you didn't care for it and that it was thrashed down there, so I thought you were saying people hated it. That's why I was saying "oh don't be snobby, it was a hit there, ha ha". Here, if we say somebody "took a thrashing" it means like they were defeated very badly in a sporting event, or got beat up, or got a severe scolding, lol, something like that, so I thought it was something negative.

Well I learn something new every day. :)

Well, we use the word thrashed for sporting events too, in the sense you describe, Chesterton. We (hopefully ;)) will say that the All Blacks (our national rugby team) thrashed the other team, meaning our team won by a big margin. Not sure how come we also use thrashed to mean played over and over on the radio - just grew up hearing people say that all the time. :)

I never took offence about the snobby thing, Chesterton. :D It was just a joke. And I'm afraid I still don't like that Captain and Tennille song. :p

I just thought - I guess it could have a slightly negative connotation if you don't actually like the song they're thrashing cos you can end up getting totally sick of the song and hoping you never have to hear it again.
