I will be subbing grade 1 and 2 Sunday School this weekend. The theme is "worship" (personal, family or church) and I'm needing ideas. Do you have any thoughts for me? I will go look at the curriculum, but I'm open to trying things you may have done before with success. Thanks in advance.

Wish I would have seen this earlier. You of course will probably have finished your class by the time you read it. Hope it went well. It is hard exactly to tell you what to do because each Sunday School is different. I have taught Sunday School in 4 different churches.

One church had so many children for the grade 1s and 2s we would all sing together in a group, and learn the memory verse together. A few of us would take turns telling the story and some would take turns teaching the memory verse. We would then break off into small groups of five and six children and give them colouring and a craft to do. We could use our own ideas or the curriculum ideas.

If you have to do everything, like I have had to, you start off with prayer, sing some songs with the children, teach them a memory verse. You could hide the words around the room and the children could find them. There are numbers on the back of the words. Call number 1 and the child with that word can put it up and so forth. Say the verse together. If you want you can say the verse and then let a child take down a word, say it again, another child takes down a word and say it again! ideas for this are endless and have noticed there are a lot of good ideas on the internet!

Next you would teach the Bible story, usually memorizing the story works best, although some children might respond well if you read them from a Bible Story Book. I did that with our kids at VBS this summer and to keep their attention had to tell the story in a dramatic way. I also think it is important that the Bible story stays true to the Bible, as it is God's true Word.

You then could have a colouring picture for the children to do, or an easy search-a-word puzzle. You can do a craft pertaining to the story or theme. Not knowing your story or them I can not of course suggest a craft. In our last session the children painted a fish with sparkle paint pens to remind them of our story when Jesus said "I will make you fishers of men, if you follow me" We also had a time where the children could fish for fish and on the back of the fish it said "tell Mom: Jesus loves you!" etc. We also had the memory verse on the back, so they could take the fish home with them.

God bless you! children are a joy to teach!

Why don't you take a liturgy book and break it down and explain everything the priest does during the service? Those service books usually have Bible references in them, so you could break it down with Bible stories and such.
