Jesus said that blessed are those who are poor in spirit, in Matthew 5:3.
I believe that it means we realize that we always need the grace of God, that we can never be good enough, or holy enough before God, so we need his grace for that.
Also, if we keep that attitude realizing that without God's grace and help, we will remain to be poor in spirit, then the only way for us to grow spiritually, is to seek the help and the grace of God, more and more! If we always realize, that we can not ever be grown enough or spiritual enough in Christ, then we will continue to seek and depend more and more on the grace of God, for our lives.
We are a work in progress, till the end of our lives, and our santification is a process, God moves us from glory to glory, and grows us towards perfection, from day to day.
We need always to realize and keep a poor spirit attitude, because only that means we seek God, want to grow more in him, and are hungry for more of him! We can never be satisfied and stop our progress and growth in the things of God.
