Ok, but if the guy in the article could get health care, it would be the best health care in the world.
He could have floated to Cuba on an inner tube and then he would have the best healthcare in the world for free

I think it's terrible. My dad had a stroke last year in October. He was rushed to the hospital through 911/ambulance. While in the "waiting room" in the stretcher they started telling him he needed to give them a $2000 check. They have had Blue Cross and Blue Shield for over 10 years but that was part of the down payment. My mother thankfully arrived soon after to write the check. He was way too out of it to even really understand them.

Gee, it sure sounds like government is the solution!

According to the AHA, for every dollar provided in patient care, hospitals receive only 92 cents in Medicare reimbursements and 87 cents from Medicaid, the federal-state health program for low-income people.

What is the solution? I'm finally trying to do something about my health but in the meantime I've been nickel and dimed to death with copays here and there and everywhere. I swear I ought to take out an insurance policy on my teeth and let myself sit around and rot. Golly.

Remember, you're not rotting for the sake of rotting. You're rotting for the noble goal of Bill Gates and George Soros being able to afford their fourth and fifth LearJets. Remember, if we did anything to help the common man or deny Big Medicine its 10% per year premium and co-pay hikes, we would all turn into poor, starving socialists like everyone in Norway and Sweden.

Read the article.

Here's a guy who did everything right. Got his private healthcover. Saved for retirement.

Yet he soon found out that private insurers will use any excuse not to cover or pay out (the beloved "pre-existing condition"), and the charity cover that all the private health supporters rave about refused to take him because he had a lousy $10K in superannuation.

In other words - this guy is screwed.

The people who are so anti-universal health care should be afraid - this could very well be you.

No they're not...for surely if they fawn at the feet of the wealthy elite, and sacrifice for their wealth and power, they shall be showered with blessings and mana.

The whole neocon movement is looking less and less like a viable political force, and more and more like a modern-day cargo cult, worshiping at the feet of the elite, working to oppose anything that might compromise their interests (even as our overall standard of living declines), confident that The Market and its demigods will bestow trickle-down riches onto them and us.

So far we've been waiting over twenty years...so I guess the neocons are willing to go on waiting for their blessings, at least as long as the food and the toilet paper holds out.

Millionaires from all over the world come here to get treatment. Why are these hippies saying it doesn't work?

Millions? Last year less than 400,000 EU citizens traveled to America for necessary treatment.

The USA is 38th on the WHO ranking of best health care systems. There is a reason, it is the only developed country in the world not to provide universal care for all citizens.

The U.S. system gets high marks for production and innovation, but low grades for distribution of health care.

The European system isn't quite as good at innovation, but distributes services far better.

So, the obvious answer here is to create a hybrid system that combines American production techniques, but distributes the "product" more like Europe does.

And enough of the talk that socialized systems can't innovate. If Cuba, with a mere fraction of the per capita wealth America has, can have a vaccine for lung cancer alongside a highly socialized system, then we could have some degree of socialization without R&D screeching to a halt. I can understand some skepticism about government involvement, but the jingoistic scare talk that the "U.S. system is teh BEST!" and socializing medicine is the road to doom needs to stop. Discussions of public policy need to be rooted in fact, not ideology, and the facts don't support the notion that socialized medicine is universally horrible.
