It's a while ago now and I've lost the thread. But someone told me that The Gospels (canonical or otherwise) were intended to be acted-out for onlookers, with those that were genuinely apostolic being in essence, first written and then effectively directed in a tradition by and from the apostle himself.
Well, this is news to me but very interesting indeed if true. I wonder if anyone has any information about this, or can point me at some relevant reading.
