  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Actually the Fed made the announcement. And there was no interest rate hike.
And unemployment is still at record lows.
Thank God we had someone with experience at the helm, who let the experts use their best judgment without interference.
Government is complicated. Trump tried to keep interest rates at zero. He interfered. He probably brought some of our problems on.
I find the unemployment figures to be deceiving. It is really tailored to answering the question, "Of those looking for a job, who is not employed." A better measure of how employment is in the U.S. is the labor participation rate, which looks like this over the last 70 years.

In Jan. 2020, it was 63.3%. In May, 2023 it had recovered to 62.6%. So the trend is positive; but not up to pre-pandemic levels yet.

I imagine many of retirement age, who otherwise were planning to continue to work prior to covid, opted to retire during covid. That could account for the post covid recovery showing a lower participation rate while also have very low unemployment.

We have reached the plateau level from, 2015 to 2020 of about 63%

I would note that low participation has been a issue since the decline began in 2000 (from a level of 67%).
==========
I find it interesting that male labor participation rates have been coming down over recent decades, while female participation has been going up. The difference is now a steady 12%. I expect this tris difference to tighten as women account or a higher and higher percentage of high school and college graduates.

Also, technological changes make certain jobs disappear while increasing the number of others.

Inflation is the rate of increase on the price of goods, so it can fall when prices are still going up.

People generally are not very smart about things like changes in rates, elementary statistics, etc.

True... and some do not realize that it is both accumulative and that even if it dropped to 0 today, prices would still be 20% higher than they were 2 or three years ago... and they would not go back down... ever. All the businesses that have collapsed will still be collapsed. All the shortages will continue, the huge amounts of money that were printed will still be there, and the trillions added to the deficit will still be hanging over our children's heads. The people who are not employed will still not be employed, and the smoke and mirrors of how they count the unemployment rate will still fool people into thinking it is still low. So in the end people cannot understand why the economy can be booming, but somehow be in the pits. More Jedi Mind Tricks. "The economy, good it is. Hmmmm, back to sleep you want to go."

Hence Vegas.

Becoming angry and politically assertive about issues one doesn't fully understand seems both unhealthy and unproductive. Sadly our political system is built upon thousands of relatively efficient turd stirring anger mongers.

It is kind of like saying "The dam broke last week and put our houses under 30 feet of water. But the deluge is over now, and our houses are only under 10 feet of water. So it is ok."

Maybe the House Republicans could do something about it instead of the 53rd attempt to impeach the President, censure Rep. Schiff or hold more hearings about unverified forms and tape recordings that don't exist.

Yeah. 4% inflation is EXACTLY the same as a house being 10 feet under water.

In your scenario, the water is receding not rising, so while not okay yet, it's still better than the alternative.

Yes I would never contest that "some" Americans are pretty ignorant about this or that.

Re "all the shortages" tho, I just bought a dozen eggs for $0.99

I do think times are going to get tight due to factors beyond any political influence. And people will increasingly demand a strong man type who promises to fix everything by sheer force of personality. We've already seen the start of that. So much winning.

I live in the state of Washington, my girlfriend lives in Vancouver BC. Eggs there are expensive. So she would ask if I would bring a couple of dozen with me when I visit. I go at night to avoid traffic. One time at the border stop they asked if I had eggs. I said yes. They said drive to secondary. When I turned a corner my headlights shined on this table about twenty feet long stacked about two feet high with eggs. I guess I wasn't the only one running eggs. It was because of Avian flu.
