  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Did anyone have any depression after their c-section?

For example if you had invisioned this wonderful natural birth or what-have-you did anyone here feel bad or feel a sense of failure or something (I have heard this can be common in women who have had c-sections)?

I did, but I also had a multitude of other issues at the time as well, like my daughter was born 11 months after my m/c and I resented myself, her and the baby I lost. On top of that I could even labor and birth properly, that was the thought in my head at the time.

This pregnancy is going much better mentally.

Well its not exactly a choice anymore....as its either get a c-section or take a risk at the child having shoulder dystocia...but I personally wasn't nervous at all about vaginal birth and can say I'm considerably nervous about the thought of c-section. I guess I wasn't nervous about vaginal birth as my first was born vaginally.

I was only slightly depressed at not having a vaginal birth the second time. My daughter was breech and I had her turned and still-failure to progress after a ridiculously long labor. I was glad to be bailed out of my "situation" and finally get to meet my sweet little girl and not be pregnant anymore. Being pregnant was hard on me and both times I was high as a kite to have my body getting back to normal.

I'm done having babies but I'd go for a c-section without fear if it was me.

From everything I've heard shoulder dystocia can't be predicted ahead of time. What makes your doctor think you are at risk?

Well she did do an exam and going by the measurements she has said there is a chance of it. Also with my heigth (i'm pretty short--like 4'11-5 feet even) its also an issue of concern with the measurements of the baby by the time she will be born around 10 lbs (or possibly over) Now accourding to her its only a 10-15% chance of the dystocia happening. So no, its not an exact predcition but speaking medically that's a uncomfortably high percentage. And its too high of one for me to just play around with.

I'm sorry but I'm not willing to take a chance on something happening to the baby just to be able to have the baby 'normally'. I'd never forgive myself if that happend.

I wanted to hear about good c-sectoin experiences..not be asked questions as to my doctors recommendations and questioning of the choices I've had to make! I've had to hear it from enough people including my sister-in-law. If someone who is a doctor or midwife here thinks I could use better consul than that's fine...

My sisters second baby had shoulder dystocia, she did give birth vaginally but in all honesty she probably would have been better having a c-section, the doctor had to put his hand inside her and twist the baby to get him unstuck . . . it took her weeks to heal up.

10-15% is high risk, and if I were faced with those odds I think I'd get a c-section too.

I had 2.
The first was an emergency C after laboring for 12 hours. The recovery of that one was long and hard on me. I labored (w/o drugs) for 12 hours and was 9.5 cms dialated and my baby was stuck. The baby's HR dropped so low I was rushed to a C.
I chose to have another C with my second. Apparently I produce large kiddos and at 37 weeks the baby was measuring 8lbs. Since they couldn't induce after a c-section I ran the risk of going past my due date making my baby larger so I opted for the c-section at 39 wks.
I was at peace with my decisions. I'm not a big "all natural, no drugs, only breastfeeding" kind of gal so what ever had to be done I was ok with.
I didn't suffer any depression from not having a "natural" birth but I was beginning to suffer from anxiety when I couldn't nurse my firstborn. The pressure from ppl around me (family and friends) was horrific. For my sanity and my baby, I switched to formula.

I was talking to some girls in my church group last night and we were talking about c-sections. I would actually prefer to just have the c-section and get it over with. I have never been big on him having to be born naturally and wanting to experience childbirth. It is what it is and I will be fine whether I experience it or not. I just want my baby safe. I am still prayin for you Sidhe...your beautiful baby girl will be here in no time!!! How exciting! I pray God brings you through and gives you a peace like you have never known going in!

Sorry, I wasn't trying to question your decision just wondered what the reasons were. I had people try to make me feel bad for not taking antibiotics while being GBS+ with my son so I know what it's like for people to try to make you feel like you're being a bad parent.

FWIW, my sister just had a c-section 2 months ago and recovered just fine :)

Just to bring a note of reality here, C-sections have saved the lives of many babies and it's great doctors can do them, but nether-the-less a c-section is major abdominal surgery, things can go wrong - very very wrong I think it's very bad to think of them as an alternative way of giving birth, they should be thought of as an emergency procedure to ensure the safety of the baby and only that.
