  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I listen to talk radio, Point of View. I heard them talking about this movie that will be coming out in December. Have you heard of it? Whats your thoughts if you have, If you have not I got this info from Wikipedia. The Golden Compass is Philip Pullmans first novel of his trilogy His Dark Materials.

*******************************
Several key themes of the novels, the rejection of organized religion and the abuse of power in a fictionalized Catholic Church, are to be diluted in the adaptation. Director Weitz said "in the books the Magisterium is a version of the Catholic Church gone wildly astray from its roots" but that the organization portrayed in his film would not directly match that of Pullman's books. In an attempt to avoid a religious backlash, the Magisterium will instead be a critique of all dogmatic organizations.[30] Weitz said that New Line Cinema had feared the story's anti-religious themes would make the film financially unviable in the US, and so religion and God will not be referenced directly. Attempting to reassure fans of the novels, Weitz said that religion would instead appear in euphemistic terms, yet the decision has been attacked by some fans,[31] anti-censorship groups, and the National Secular Society (of which Pullman is an honorary associate), which said " they are taking the heart out of it, losing the point of it, castrating it",[32] "this is part of a long-term problem over freedom of speech." The changes from the novel have been present since Tom Stoppard's rejected version of the script,[23] and Pullman himself believes the film will be "faithful."[30]
As part of a two-month protest campaign, the Catholic League has called for a boycott of the film. They believe that while the religious elements of the film will be "watered down" from the source novels, it will still encourage children to read the series, which League president William A. Donohue says "denigrates Christianity" and promotes "atheism for kids",[4][33] citing author Pullman as saying that he is "trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief."[34] It is the League's hope that "the film [will fail] to meet box office expectations and that [Pullman's] books attract few buyers."[35]
Director Weitz says that he believes His Dark Materials is "not an atheistic work, but a highly spiritual and reverent piece of writing",[31] and Nicole Kidman, a Catholic, has defended her decision to star in the film, saying that "the Catholic Church is part of my essence. I wouldn't be able to do this film if I thought it were at all anti-Catholic".[24]
Some commentators have indicated they believe both sides' criticism will prove ultimately "impotent" and that the negative publicity will prove a boon for the film's box office,[36][37] while other evangelical groups, such as The Christian Film and Television Commission, are adopting a "wait-and-see" approach to the film before deciding upon any action.[38]
********************************

Guys this movie is coming out in December targeted at our kids. If the movie flops or hits, the Book trilogy will be the target in my opionion, Cause what parent doesn't want their kids to read a good book;) . But the harmful part is the movie will be "watered down" the book will not be.

I heard this on the radio, and thought I would look into to it. I heard what they said and felt sick. Please reserch it, before you get the ticket.

God Bless You

I'm on the waiting list to read it from my library, and I have the second book of the trilogy to look at. It looks from the previews like the sort of fantasy story our family usually enjoys. But if there are anti-Christian or anti-religious messages, I want to be aware of them before we go (or to help us decide IF to go).

From what I've been reading online, the movie itself won't be too bad -- the anti-established-religion sections have been watered down or eliminated. The main problem I'm reading is that the big megalithic religious group in the book, the Magisterium, could be modeled from or give comparison to the Roman Catholic Church at its medieval worst. Or the Taliban. Or the colonial Puritans. Or any other far-reaching religious-and-political authoritarian body, for that matter. That's why, I think, the RCC has called for a boycott of the film.

I, for one, have become tired of the anti-religious messages we see on TV and in film. The bad guy is often a priest, or the pastor is heavy-handed and authoritarian, or is ineffectual as a husband and father. If that's the main point of the film, that's one thing. Such issues can be explored with respect and tact. But when, along with the "token Sikh" in a background shot you also have the "close-minded, mean Christian fundie" neighbor, it cheeses me off.

We have begun making a point of identifying these stereotypes when we notice them in TV shows and movies, and making sure our daughter is aware of them. It might be a case with The Golden Compass that we only have to warn her and discuss it with her. It might be that it is so blatant that we do not allow her to see it. We'll know more once it is out and more people we trust have seen it and reviewed it.

I reiceved an email warning about this movie. With some info, it sounds rather against God & Christian. They said there seems to be hopes of people being attracted to the book which is more anti- Christian.

Here is a snopes link with lots of info on it.

I have had email alerts that the movie is overtly anti-Christian also. Quite frankly, I'm pretty tired of the fantasy genre - what happened to truth and real life?

I hear what you are saying but from what I have seen it is targeted for Kids. Take the Narnia movie and this would be the complete opposite. So for adults no biggie we really could care less about a fantasy movie. But kids will see the promo and think neat, just like Narnia. And parents will think cool its based off a trilogy of books, I will just buy 'little Joe' the book set for Christmas. Ugghhh. :(

Will see, the movie comes out December 7th.:help: The movie will be the stepping stone to promote the books.
I have not read the books, So I really can't share anymore than what I have heard. The name of the trilogy just does not intrest me. (His Dark Materials)

The Magistrum in the books looks like a combination of the Catholic Church and Calvinism, and is based in switzerland, some people talk about how it is agianst organised religion or overly dogmatic, no the book is agianst a belief in God and Christianity in general. I would not want any child to see this movie, the book is athiest propaganda, and Pullman even describes it as the "anti-Narnia"

Didn't know about the movie, but frankly, can't imagine many children getting through the book! I have read all three, but it took me over a month (and I usually read three or four books a week!)
It is very hard going.
But, I wouldn't let anyone under about 14 read it, as it is overtly anti- God.

Not a patch on Narnia, or Harry Potter, IMO!

My daughter is an avid reader. She likes fantasy books. I usually look up reviews or browse through the books before she reads them. We were in a situation where I could not do that with this book and she really wanted to read it. I let her. Bad decision.

She read this book last December and it bothered her greatly. She said that the book twisted the Bible's words. I was proud of her that she could see the problems with the book. She could see the difference between a fantasy novel and a book that had negative undertones.

We usually give books away to others when she is done with them, but this book she told me to throw away. She did not want anyone else to read it.

I saw the trailer to the movie. It looked very appealing. We will not be seeing it. Even if it is watered down - I do not want them to get my money.

I had never heard of the book(s) before, but I saw a preview last night at the movies. The preview made it look interesting, but that is based on the fact that I had never heard of it before.

I'll definitely look into this more before I decide to see it. Thankfully, my daughter is too young to be interested in the book, and if we went to see it, she will probably have forgotten about it by the time she would be old enough to read those type of books.

I have the book. My daughter bought it at a Scholastic Book Fair at school.

I'm gonna have to read it now 'cause I'm curious. Her bookmark is on page 6 and she stopped reading it so it can't be that interesting from her perspective :D
