  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Great question.

The first answer, is to understand enough about His principles and will by regularly reading what it is. But for a faster answer, research. Make wise decisions.

Consider all people involved -- who will be hurt or distanced, who will lose out. Consider your overall long-term goals -- can it lead you in the direction you hope to head? Consider the costs -- can you manage it?

Just to build a little on what Gabe said... there's a good book called "The Red Sea Rules"... the author analyzed the story of the parting of the Red Sea and gleaned ten distinct "rules" to help get you through trials. Very helpful book.

Anyway, one of the rules is: "When unsure, just take the next logical step in faith." Focus on doing what lies clearly at hand rather than worrying about the future, which is not clear. Several times recently, I have been waiting for a phone call or text to go out and do something, even though I had things I needed to get done before I could go anywhere. So, I went ahead and did the things that were clearly at hand... and as soon as I was done, I got the calls I was waiting for. Very edifying.

How do you find a balance between Gods will and taking action on something?

Like how do you make a decision on something big if you havent received a direct answer and it isnt against anything in the Bible?

First and foremost, there are only 3 kinds of decisions, big or small. They are right, wrong, and just decisions. How do you know the difference? Scripture tells you.

God is pretty clear that there are some things clearly wrong. So, make decisions that are not clearly wrong. That leaves you in a position of making a right decision, or just a decision that is neither right nor wrong, it is "just" a decision. If you do not have the boldness of the Holy Spirit in making either a clearly right decision or "just" a decision, try researching laying a fleece before the Lord for His guidance. OT concept, but go to Judges chapter 6 and get the concept. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. I have "laid a fleece" before the Lord and He has always led me in the right direction in decisions, WHEN I listened and followed Him instead of trying to lead Him to where I wanted to go.

Be blessed,

I see a lot of people here who struggle with this issue and wonder if they've been domineered through childhood, and from the pulpit.

I think God placed us in this sandbox of a world to make of it what we wanted. I think after the work of his creation, all he wanted was to sit back and delight in us. But because we used our freedom for evil, God was forced to intervene and lay down some rules.

As long as I hurt nobody, I feel I am free to do whatever I want. I could settle into a career and start a family, travel the world, dedicate myself to some kind of art; the options are only limited by my imagination. I look to my heart when it comes to big decisions, because I trust that God gave me that heart as much as any scribbled down scripture.

I believe in a God who has gifted me with glorious freedom, and I relish to engage with it.
