  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

When you talk to a person, it doesn't make sense to look for a "FEELING".

What you should be doing is...

1) paying attention in order to hear what they say....

2) making sense out of what they say (make their words meaningful to you).

3) COMMUNICATE (talk) to /with them about the issue at hand.

If you are dealing with a problem about getting to school everyday on time and you want to seek God's advice about it, in order to hear His voice, you have to decide beforehand to NOT be telling/asking Him to do YOUR WILL (HIS wise counsel is what you seek, isn't it?, or is it simply approval/justification of what you desire to happen?).....we must decrease that He may increase.

....or is it that you want Him to do what you understand to be written in scripture?....what if you understand scripture wrongly?....are you going to expect Him to do what you misunderstood in scripture or are you going to allow Him make His own decisions about your personal problem?

What are your expectations of Him? Will He disappoint you if He doesn't do or say what you want Him to?

...we must decrease our will so that He may increase in our lives.

People look for FEELINGS because THEY WANT everything to be sensational and spectacular.

God is not a drug, there are no spectacular or sensational "FEELINGS"....no tingling and no fireworks.

The only kind of feeling should be a SENTIMENT (the sentiment of warm, tender love for "Abba Father", DEAR Father being shared with a "friend of God, not a slave servant)...

Romans 8:15
"For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, "Abba! Father!".

Unfortunately, many Christians have chosen to know Him as "master"/taskmaster, but if you want a warm, close relationship with Him, you must choose to be a SON of God.

James 2:23
"and he was called the friend of God".

James 4:5
"He yearns jealously over the spirit which he has made to dwell in us".

If we DELIGHT in Him and return to Him the same kind of love He gave us on the cross (undying love), He knows what will really make us happy...

Psalm 37:4
"Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart".

Song of Songs 3:2........................(Song of Solomon)
"I will seek him whom my soul loves".

If you truly seek Him and His wise counsel, He will be there....so that.....

"God may be everything to every one" (1 Corinthians 15:28).

Verses are from the RSV.

For me, (and God has given me, at least temporarily, one of the revelation gifts), there is an inner calm, a peace, when I hear God. If I am unsure, I will ask God to verify it. Usually, He does. Someone else will get the same knowledge, or part of it.

You can't trust your feelings alone. But once you begin listening to God in small things - things you know He wants you to do - His voice becomes familiar. There have been times that the message God has given me has not been a pretty one, or a comfortable one. But the calm peace of God was still there.

The Spirit will never give you anything to do or say that is contrary to His Word. So that is a good way to test the truth in what you may be told. Don't forget, the enemy is very good at imitating God. Just continue praying and listening. If you are unsure, God will generally reinforce His message to you, either through the Bible (a passage will suddenly leap out at you), through other believers, and sometimes through coincidences. An example would be if you were thinking God may be calling you to be a missionary. Suddenly, an opening comes up in the very area you were considering.

I always like to look for God moving in the "unaltered" things of life.

Anytime I'm confused or lost and I hear a bird sing, I hear God telling me He loves me, because it's either God's voice or mere coincidence that bird started singing right when I needed to know God loves me.

Or if I'm at home, praying in bed, feeling pretty down in the dumps, and the air conditioning comes on, blowing air in the room - Scripture tells us that God's voice comes in the gentle whispers of life. It's either God's whisper or strange coincidence that the air came on right when I needed it most.

I like finding God in the things we can't influence in life. For me, there have been way too many coincidences to be mere chance. Watch for His presence around you. Even if we don't cry out to Him, He says the rocks themselves will; He is constantly calling to us through His creation.

Though it hasn't happened to me yet, be sure to let me know if you hear any pebbles screaming "I love you" :)

The presence of God in my experience is not always a feeling that comes over us. All though His all consuming fire is like the prophet Jeremiah says like a fire shut up in my bones. When the Spirit of prophecy falls on me it is a tangible feeling.
The Lord speaks to us in many different ways He may make a child say somthing that you needed to hear He may speak to you in a billboard a commercial. The hard part is fine tuning our ears for His voice. And be open to what He has to say not in the way we want Him to respond. When we do that we put God in a box and He usually won't answer us at least He won't the way we expect.
Are you baptized in the Holy Ghost? If you are pray in the Spirit then wait on the Lord don't look at your watch but wait on Him He will respond if we really want to hear what He has to say. Prayer is communication with God. Can you communicate with someone if they don't respond to you.

I think that God speaks primarily in His word, and the rest of the time in conjunction with His word. So, I would say that I recognize when God is directly speaking something when his Word cuts my tough exterior. Although, I'm not sure I believe that when God speaks I always necessarily perceive it. Often times I think that the Holy Spirit speaks more quietly, in a way that I can only really quite understand after the fact.

Obedience always opposes feeling.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by this. There are many times as a child when I was asked to do something for my parents which I also wanted to do. It would also seem that an important part of the Christian walk is not simply gutting up and doing 'the right thing', learning to want to do it as well. So, in effect, joining obedience and feeling together.

I don't really know how to describe His voice, but when He tells me things, something just clicks in my head and there is no doubting that it's His voice. Often, I'm caught off guard because I don't expect it. I also know He's there because although my soul feels calm, my chest feels heavy and full of intense love. It's almost like His love is so heavy that it's crushing me.

I like that everybody is speaking against the term "feeling". Though physically the world might say that we are just having a gut feeling, because there is nothing else in this realm to discribe it. People who have heard God speaking to them know that it is more then a simple "feeling", when the Holy Spirit comes over you you just know.
Hebrews 11:1 defines faith for us:
Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, and the conviction of things not seen.
Knowing what faith is helps us to undestand how God talks to us. Not only do we need faith to hear what God is saying, but we need faith to acknowledge that He is speaking.
-
Take the story of Samuel (1 Samuel 3).
When he was still a young boy he heard a voice calling his name one night. He got up and rushed to his master, but he was told to go back to sleep. It happened two more times that night. Finally, his master was awake enough to see what was happening, and he told Samuel "When you hear that voice again say 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'"
-
Samuel became a very important prophet. He helped establish Jerusalem, he crowned Saul, and blessed King David when he was still a shepard boy. When he died everybody in Israel mourned because they knew God spoke through him.
-
While we may never hear a diembodied voice calling our name, I kow that people have heard God calling them to do things they normally wouldn't do. About five years ago I felt God call me to go back to school, at the time I was scared and I didn't have the faith to say "Speak, Lord". But God kept tugging at me, and college information would show up in my mail box, and people would keep telling me I was too smart for fast food and that I shold go back to college, you get the point after a while.

God has often talked to me especially when I have been pregnant. I have six children and the way in which God spoke to me was different for every child. The hardest part of it all was God telling me when I was having baby number five that he was going to die. Every prayer and blessing I was given God would tell me that he could hear but it was no use that my baby would be with him. This of course devastated me and I mourned for the whole pregnancy. God even told me how my son would die. But he blessed me in so many ways, it would have to be the most amazing and saddest experience of my life and trust me that has been no walk in the park. The thing is after that child died I was sitting in a park and a beautiful little Chinese girl toddled past me and on the wind I heard God say that I would never loose another baby again and that I would have a beautiful little girl. Well of course he was right my daughter is three and a half now and people love to tell me that she looks like a beautiful angle. Remember Gods voice is all ways kind He speaks so strong and clear that there is no mistake who is talking to you, you will be humbled by the surprise of it and feel amazingly blessed. What you went through is not from God. If nothing else remember that you are a child of God and He is your ever loving protecting Father. Nothing evil will ever get through that.

I like this statement. From my experience, sometimes God speaks and its not what you expected. When it doesnt favour me,Im tempted to say 'maybe its not Him" but faith assures you that it is Him.

/\ Yes,but what if the person is a new christian like me,and hasn't developed a strong faith yet? How to recognize God's voice? Is it a actual voice you hear? How to know?

Also... i've seen many people says that God guided them in moments they didn't know what to do of their lives. I don't have one but three important questions to ask God. What should i do? I can't ask three questions all at once, can i?

I have learnt to keep my mouth closed about hearing God Speak or in my case Hearing Jesus. I have been speaking about hearing Jesus for 2 and a bit years, and only few believed me. Why that is I will never know, but what is fact not fiction is what happened just a few days ago. Jesus told me my mate was going to harm himself, so I heard and went to see him. He was and still is going through a marrage break up. I went to his house on direct request by Jesus.

The last few days have been a great testimony to the Lord, my freind was baptised here at my house and is now reading the Bible and praying.

Not dieing in some back street, thanks to Jesus and hearing with the inner ear.
