Jaz kept her eyes front and back straight as Tres Zapatos was led through the main street of the city. So this is how they try to break my spirit! she thought, Bah! They think I am as weak as the others. I shall not give them the satisfaction! She folded her hands neatly across the saddle in front of her, and gave the soldier a cold smile. "Shall we begin? Or should I lead my horse since you are so incapable of it?"
She recieved a lash of the horsewhip across her shoulders, and bit back a harsh retort as the men walking in front of her proclaimed to everyone that she was
"Jazper Manzrique, daughter of a traitor and abomination to the kingdom."
Ha! she said mentally, laughing inside. Cheatue D'if is heaven compared to this place. She only realized she'd said it out loud when the loud crack of the whip and the stinging pain jolted her back to herself.
She ignored the pain and rode quietly down the street, and she was aware that almost every person was on the street to watch her, and the counts + countesses were watching calmly as they had attendents fan them and serve them O'rs De'vors and fresh fruit. Most of them looked smug and a little bored, and she laughed mentally at them as she thought of her one friend who followed to the prison with her weapons.
Jaz fingered the poisoned knife in her skirt, but didn't dare use it until she reached the cheatue. Then she'd have plenty of chances.
She smiled sweetly at a sour-face guard. "Is that the worst you can do?"
The man gritted his teeth and looked away, aware that even a scorned woman could have nothing worse done to her than whipping and starvation. Anything beyond that would incite immediate death. And he was one of the ones who knew that mere hunger and blood would do nothing to weaken this steel-eyed girl.
