God Speaks

In this world of today with all of these different distractions, how do we know when God speaks to us. Sometimes I talk to God and then the rain would fall after I ask Him about something I ought to do. What would you do? Would you take this as a sign? Then I remember 1 Kings 19:

So He said, "Go forth and stand on the mountain before the LORD." And behold, the LORD was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12After the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a soundof a gentle blowing. 13When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

And I also remember
John 10:27

But because you are not My sheep, you refuse to believe. 27My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. 28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand.…

When God speaks to me sometimes I just know right away it is him others it takes some prayer and discernment. As you grow in him his voice will become clearer, just as with any relationship. One thing to keep in mind is his words will never contradict the scriptures. Ever. When trying to discern his voice it is imperative to weigh what you hear against scripture

As Bythespirit said, His word will never contradict scriptures. Our mind must be still, and when we think He spoke to us which in my case comes by thoughts being put into my mind, to analyze these thoughts with His word.
He also speaks to me directly through His word, by giving certain verses to read.

God has truly spoken to me 3 times in my life and filled me for hours with the Holy Ghost. He gave messages each three times and I was given peace and love of the spirit beyond myself.

So then you can recognize God's spirit, that self same spirit thru the fruits of the Holy Spirit:

Galatians: {5:22} But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, {5:23} Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

I would not ask God regarding something I was about to do. God usually works in our lives if we go about our normal way, the good way, and pray, read scriptures, attend church and fellowship, etc.

That said, I would not ask God regarding what I was about to do, because Satan is usually the first to answer, and as we learn from the scriptures he shews himself from the temple above all that is called God and fools many that he is God himself:

2 Thessalonians: {2:2} That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. {2:3} Let no man
deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come,] except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; {2:4} Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
