  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is that what I said?

Do you know the difference between someone claiming they are wise, and God pronouncing someone wise?

Let me give you an example:

God: The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. (Proverbs 11:30)

Science: We're all 'wise men' -- whether we win souls or not.

And that's just one example of many.

So for clarification:

Are you objecting to "wise man" because the bible says it is bad to be wise, or because you don't think all humans are wise?

Your irony meter aside, we call it basic doctrine.

So, its OK to call others "fools" and then complain about being insulted by these others, as long as you can justify it by quoting from scripture? Think about that before you answer.

You know the answer to this, don't you?

Are you testing me to see if I'll stick to doctrine?

Romans 1:22a Professing themselves to be wise,

Does the Bible say it's bad to be wise, or it's bad to profess oneself to be wise?

Ahhhh... so wisdom is good, as long as it is knowledge of God, and as long as we do not profess ourselves to be wise... correct?

I am asking you the question directly. Where is the "arab phone" in that?
To you, "God did it" is a 'fallible interpretation', isn't it?

And yet again, for the record:

Romans 14:5b Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

I'm not going to claim I'm fully persuaded, while at the same time claiming my interpretation is fallible, just to placate an inquisition.

I don't make it a habit of calling atheists* "fools", do I?

And when I do use the term, it's as a synonym for "atheist".

So yes, it's OK to call others "atheists" and then complain about being insulted by them.

* Interesting you changed it to "others".

It would be very hard to claim that "God did it" is a fallible interpretation of scripture, as it really boils scripture down to the very bare bones, so to speak. I suppose for the sake of rigor we would still have to call any interpretation fallible... but "God did it," comes as close to very basic doctrine as anything can. Nevertheless, there are very reasonable alternative interpretations that you reject, while still claiming yours is "what the bible tells us." I understand why you do so, but that does not make your position any more correct. And once again I have to ask how you can ever determine if your doctrine is correct or not. I submit that you cannot, and therefore should not be telling us to reject reality as we have determined it to be, just to satisfy that doctrine.

So someone could use the synonym "idiot" for theist and you wouldn't find it insulting?

Quite frankly my experience here tells me you do.

And when I do use the term, it's as a synonym for "atheist".
That really doesn't make it any better!

So yes, it's OK to call others "atheists" and then complain about being insulted by them.
Hmmmm.... do you think the atheists here would agree?

Interesting you changed it to "others".
Atheists are people too, AVET. Should you treat them differently, because they are atheists? Or should you not judge them and let God do that?

Heavens no -- I'd wear it like a badge.

Same as "deceiver".

2 Corinthians 6:8 By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;

In fact, I would even let you off the hook by not asking you to back up your synonym with basic [McGraw-Hill] doctrine.

Perhaps the moral of the story is that refusing to answer a reasonable 'easy' question just spawns more of them.
Jade, I hope you're reading this thread and understanding it as an example of simple questions leading to an inquisition.

So you're quite content with the discussion devolving into deliberately insulting synonyms going back and forth?

And you want to be considered a civil provocateur here? You are, with this insistence here the only person looking for a metaphorical fight.

Ah, so now at last we get the biblical confirmation why you refuse to be called wise.

Nice to show your true colours after all.

Seems more like an example of what happens when you try to weasel out of "simple" questions.

Well, I certainly don't have to look far do I?

All anyone has to do is come here and say Jesus walked on water, and the fight is on!

That's only a concern for you, I guess. Jolly good for the spirit but not a coherent way of knowing what actually happened.

Are you seriously suggesting though that you simply force yourself to believe in miracles because the alternative is that science will 'win' (whatever that means)?
It's a battle dontchaknow? True Christianity vs. an evil, science driven secular satanic worldview.

Because all you ever do come here and say thing... you never issue "challenges" or such things.

No, not you. Must be some diabolical mimicry of you who is looking for all those fights.

Jade, I hope you're reading this thread and understanding it as an example of simple questions leading to an inquisition.

Actually I'm getting more of a 'Don't ask AV questions that he can't answer with a pithy one-liner or you'll be blatantly ignored' moral to this story.

After all, you've been answering questions with just about every post you make, so you obviously don't have a problem with 'inquisition' in general. Just hard questions that make you think.

Prove me wrong.
