Women, not limited to Christianity, played the key role in the civil rights movement.

George Washington's intention was to pacify the Delaware Indians and to encourage them to maintain peace based on the Christianity introduced to them by the Morovian missionaries.

When presented with a petition from pro-Christian delegation after the matter of the murder of White Eyes, an influential Delaware chief, without instruction from Congress on how he should handle the matter, he did direct them to continue in their current learning as a means to keep peace and order with the Delaware Nation. In the context of this quote you gave, he isn't intending to express any commentary regarding the instruction of Christianity to the American nation he presided over. It was purely a diplomatic move born out of mistrust for the Delaware Indians.​

Of this incident, he later wrote: "[they]

presented me with a long memorial on various points, which they intend to present also to Congress. I was a little at a loss what answer to give and could have wished they had made their first application there. But as an answer could not be avoided, I thought it safest to couch it in general but friendly terms and refer them to Congress for a more particular one. At the very least, we gather that George Washington was aware that Christianity is a peaceful way of bringing people's together and maintaining peace, regardless of assumed accusations that George Washington may have had ulterior motives for the discussion.
