I've heard before that God is in control of everything. What about our free will?

God chooses not to be in control of everything. That began when he created independent beings who he granted the ability to think and decide for themselves.

So I would say that God could control everything. It is within God's power. But it is not what God does.

Actually it is God who comes to us and then we have the opportunity to respond. Grace precedes conversion and enables it to happen in the first place. (Prevenient Grace).
