You could have said homosexuals instead of using the F word. Would you like it if I called you the B word?

I assume the intent is to refer to the famous sign, not to personally insult people.

I have seen a growing tend towards using the term affectionately, in any case.

I have edited the post to remove the f word. I felt that it was important to use it as that was one of the things i was compaining about.

I would like to say sorry to anyone who was offended by it, i know i was when i first saw the picture. I would also like to say sorry for using the word in my post.

Love

the "christians" you are referring to happen to be nearby neighbors of mine. No joke. They are out of topeka and go around protesting everything from Mathew Shephards funeral to the funerals of Soldiers. Frankly its sad when someone has nothing else to do but spread hate--when Christ only spoke of love.

Jo Zollars
Yeah since I found out where Joe lives I have prayed daily for his safety.

How ya been Joe I've missed seeing you around. Congrats on your decision to go back to school I am envious as there is no really good Library Science program anywhere near where I live.

As for the subject. (I haven't yet read all of the responses here) God hates sin I think that is clear however people are not sin. Often the two are confused in some people's minds. Scripture makes clear what is to guide our relationships. It isn't hate.

there's a website out there called God hates figs. Should provide some light relief.
I don't recommend anyone visit the site. It is as hate filled as the title suggests and enraging.

Did you read the previous post and think she was referring to the Phelps site, or did you really mean that in response to "God Hates Figs"? the mediteranian fruit. High in fiber with a unique taste, often served stuffed into a soft, pastry-like wrapper known as a Fig Newton.

If a person can be truly, pathologically evil (and I think a case could be made for a DSM-IV classification for "evil"), Fred Phelps should surely qualify.

For that matter, I think Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, D. James Kennedy and James Dobson might well qualify, as well.

Because they have a) dedicated their lives to, and b) earn a profit from harming others in as many manipulative and deceptive ways as possible.

Off the top of my head:

A. Simply lying for the sole purpose of marginalizing and hurting people. Example: Pat Roberson's statement (perhaps slightly off; I'm doing this from memory) that the gay agenda is to break into churchs, throw blood around and give everybody AIDS and spit in the face of the pastor.

B. Beyond the simple lying, that they promote "scapegoat" mentalities that direct anger and hatred toward certain groups of people. Example: Jerry Falwell stating that a certain disaster (I think it was Katrina, but may have been 9/11) was God's punishment for "femininsts," "pagans," "homosexuals," and others, and that these people were to blame for it.

C. Driving people who are honestly searching for God further away by presenting God in this way.

D. Filling the ranks of Church with people who present God in this way, exponentially exacerbating both B and C.

In short, they do evil harmful things, and call it good. The evil itself directly harms those against whom it is aimed, and the deception causes innocent people to either reject what is good because they were misled to see it as evil (ie: rejecting God or Christ, after seeing evil done in his name and believing it to be an accurate representation of God), or embrace what is evil because they were misled to see it as good (ie: embracing the hatred and harm caused by these people, believing that it is an accurate representation of God).

Would you have any references for this lying? or to back up your statment of their motives? I find it very difficult to believe that James Dobson or any of the others go out of their way to say things specifically to marginalize and hurt others. Do you have any documentation?

It may be possible that others feel that God was judiging the U.S. I don't agree that either 9/11 or Katrina were judgements but I know others do. Do you have any documentation? I would be especially interested in comments by D.James Kennedy and James Dobson.
C. Driving people who are honestly searching for God further away by presenting God in this way.
In what way? I don't see James Dobson or Kennedy presenting God in the same way Phelps does. I don't know much about the other two so I don't really know if they do or not.
D. Filling the ranks of Church with people who present God in this way, exponentially exacerbating both B and C.
] Well I haven't seen any evidence of B or C.

Well you have made some pretty serious accusations. Again I respectfully ask do you have any references to back them up?

Dobson's anti-gay stuff regularly includes support from long-debunked sources. He was one of the people to continue citing the Cameron studies, as I recall. He's got a conclusion picked in advance, and he accepts any claims that seem to support it and rejects any that seem to oppose it; the net result is systematically inaccurate.

I cannot state with certainty that he is lying; there are two other possibilities that come to mind. One is that he has a reckless disregard for the truth of his claims, the other is that he is one of the most spectacularly incompetent researchers the world has ever seen.

As I didn't write the post that we are both discussing (UberLutheran's) I had no choice in who was included in his list. When I responded, I referred to Robertson and Falwell specifically, because I am more familiar with them. I'm going to stick to that.
That said, here is a partial transcript of the the 700 Club, where Falwell blames everybody he doesn't like for 9/11, and Robertson "concurs."

Here is a page of Robertson Quotes--his "throwing blood around" line is at the bottom of the first section, just above "no American causalties in Iraq." It includes many other lines by him, such as calling somebody who had called into the show a "Big fat nancy nancy-boy [slur for gay man]," and his assertion that "Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It's the same thing. It's happening all over again. ...".

Same website, flipping back over to Jerry Falwell, we find the usual "Aids is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals...[and] for the society that tolerates homosexuals" tripe.
There's one, Robertson says this too, about the Anti-Christ likely being Jewish, but he words it in such a way that he can probably escape anti-semitism charges.

There's a statement, not recorded, but attributed to him by his ghostwriter and, until they parted ways, long-time friend Mel White "Thank God for these gay demonstrators. If I didn't have them, I'd have to invent them. They give me all the publicity I need."

edit: I clicked on the links to make sure they work, and it seems that the first one does not. I'm not sure why that is....the line is quoted on at least one of the other pages though, and possibly both.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. Jtbdad tells me I cannot respond here so I will just say I disagree.

Asking questions is not the same as debating.

It seems like you were asking questions, so I'd say go ahead and ask your questions.

God hates flags?

Why would God hate flags? I mean, some flags are prettier than other flags, and some flags have geometric patterns on them while others have funny little writing on them; and here and there you see a moon, or a snake, or maybe even a little frog; but I can't see why God would hate a flag....

What: you mean God doesn't hate flags?

Oh: that's different.

He told me I could ask questions but I couldn't argue with the answers. He also told me that a lot of fundamentalists sometimes cause trouble here. (He didn't like that) He is a friend of mine and he didn't want me to get into trouble.
