Global Warming---Oops!!

Global warming means warming all around the world. If there is not warming occurring (and that means rising average temperatures) all around the world in every single location, Global warming has been disproved.

If you can prove to me that in the last 20 years, the heat has been going up statistically in every single part of the world, I will believe you and consider myself a fool for thinking otherwise.

It's not complicated, but it's also (as we've seen) not particularly fruitful. That information is obviously going to be ignored. Why would I waste my time just like all of the other people who've been participating in these threads? Are you familiar with the phrase "casting pearls before swine"?

Then one wonders why you are wasting your time.

Either carry on respectful dialogue and all that that entails or make your point so that others can be suitably impressed with your vast skills and knowledge. Cavalier insults don't exactly enhance dialogue and they don't impress anyone who is looking for information.

I didn't take a cheap shot at "those having opposing opinions." I took a shot at people who make refuse to acknowledge that their beliefs have been debunked and continue to spread falsehoods.

I wasn't arguing about climate science. I was speculating to another poster about what motivates certain behaviors.

Going by what I've seen in the climate change threads, it's pretty clear that skills, knowledge, and the ability to make a lucid point supported by facts and scientific discovery are insufficient to impress those skeptics who are more interested in mocking and antagonizing the non-skeptics.

Lol, neither does the inane mockery in which a number of the skeptics (though not all of them) are engaging. But again, I don't see you saying much to those folks.

True, but those folks seem to be in short supply around here. If I thought that this thread was doing a lot to foster the dissemination of good information, I would've kept my opinions to myself.

With your vast trove of superior knowledge ... you should be able to convincingly win the argument on merit alone. Consider trying that instead of being "rude and snarky", as you say.

One cannot win an argument against someone who doesn't even know about variance around a regression line and refuses to learn it no matter how often it is brought up.

One cannot win an argument against someone who has no earthly idea of the basic chemistry and physics and willfully IGNORES it when it is presented.

Finally, one cannot win an argument with someone who WILLFULLY MISREPRESENTS and TWISTS OTHERS POSTS TO MAKE IT SOUND LIKE THEY HAVE AGREED TO THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT THEY BELIEVE AND HAVE STATED.

It's as simple as that.

If YOU were so skilled in this area, YOU wouldn't have to MISREPRESENT OTHER PEOPLE'S POSTS would you?

It's both. I've got family members who lack scientific understanding and, thus, espouse many of the denialist views, but they don't just openly ignore information when it's in front of them. The individuals to which I was referring start with a lack of scientific understanding (though I'm sure many of them are smart enough to understand if they wanted to), and build their infantile mockery from there.

What I don't get is why they think it's fun or funny. I like mocking people as much as anyone, but doing so in a way that makes me look like an imbecile seems a bit counter productive. Maybe the guilty parties don't have the level of self-awareness needed to recognize when they're making themselves look like imbeciles?

That's because they don't even understand what they are satirizing or parodying.

You can tell because the only person they can think of is a NON CLIMATE SCIENTIST whose words really don't matter at all in the debate!

It's kind of like meta-satire. They are making fun of their own ineptitude by putting it on display for all of us.
