  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

You represent the following:

1. Failure to understand basic science which leads you to post trash threads that are based on this bad science.
You subservience to a different viewpoint is acknowledged.
2. Prideful disdain for those who do not have your own ignorance.
How much pride can I have to endure continual berating by you?
3. Dishonesty in dealing with others' points.
Sigh ... and some wonder why their posts are reported for rules violations. :sigh:
So of course I'm going to fight against that! My question is: WHO WOULDN'T?
Personally, I'd recommend sticking to facts, as per your claimed scientific training ... and leave the acerbic diatribe to political wonks.

But, that's just my recommendation ...

Yes, I'm "subservient" to a need to actually UNDERSTAND what it is I talk about.

Your indifference to this need is also noted.

How much pride can I have to endure continual berating by you?

Leviticus 26:19 And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass

Personally, I'd recommend sticking to facts, as per your claimed scientific training ... and leave the acerbic diatribe to political wonks.

U.S. to help Chinese, Russian ships stuck off Antarctica - CNN.com
The U.S. Coast Guard's "only active heavy polar icebreaker," the 399-foot long Polar Star recently completed a three-year, $90 million overhaul.

Capable of traveling at speeds of 18 knots (21 mph), the ship can continuously break through 6 feet of ice while traveling 3 knots. With its reinforced hull and special bow, the Polar Star can bust through as much as 21 feet of ice at a time.

After its new mission, the U.S. Coast Guard vessel is set to continue to its original mission in McMurdo Sound.
Stay tuned ...

Turney's expedition's goal was, among other things to investigate the East Antarctic Ice Sheet.

THIS IS LAND-BASED ICE....NOT SEA ICE.

Please get this part straight before you mischaracterize what happened here!

PLEASE LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAND AND SEA. It is CRUCIAL.

In addition they were going to look at Southern Ocean currents. Guess what?

Yeah, they did that!

But the key here is you and the rest of the non-scientists think all ice is the same! In this case it makes a HUGE difference because of what happened!

The Akademik got stuck because of DRIFTING SEA ICE due to polar circulation! It fits with various aspects of what we know is happening in the Southern Ocean. AND the fact that they got stuck in ICE doesn't change the fact that OTHER LAND-ICE is disappearing.

This key difference is the MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THIS STORY and the fact that you guys can't keep this straight only makes your "critiques" look sillier and sillier and sillier with each passing post!

Do you realize that when you conflate SEA and LAND ice you you make your position scientifically WEAKER?
Let's start with basics. Here's a map:

450px-Antarctica_regions_map.png

Commonwealth Bay, where the Akademik Shokalskiy is stuck in ice can be seen in the lower right quadrant. It's part of "Eastern Antarctica", where glaciers have been increasing for the past couple of decades. Reports from Antarctica indicate that sea ice filling the harbor is largely from the adjacent Mertz glacier.

Here's an interesting article on the matter: An icy blast of scepticism | The Australian
GRAINY film footage from Douglas Mawson's epic Antarctic survey and expedition provides lasting proof that when the adventurer's team reached Commonwealth Bay exactly 100 years ago, it was free of sea ice.

It is a historical fact that some people argue can only add to acute embarrassment for Australian climate scientist Chris Turney, the carbon entrepreneur and head of climate science at the University of NSW, whose Antarctic mission has come to a frozen dead stop.

Turney's team of embedded global media and paying science-minded tourists has spent the festive season trapped in sea ice instead of exploring what melting ice caps mean for mankind.

Rather than disappearing poles, for more than a week global attention has been focused on the fact that in recent years Antarctic ice has been growing, not shrinking as in the Arctic.

Thinning ice is due to global warming, and excessive ice, of course, is also due to global warming. Or so we're told

When a glacier thins it increases the speed with which it slides out into the water if it is in contact with the shoreline.

melting_glacier_f.jpg

From HERE:

"The accelerating contribution of glaciers and ice caps is due in part to rapid changes in the flow of tidewater glaciers that discharge icebergs directly into the ocean, said the study. Many tidewater glaciers are undergoing rapid thinning, stretching and retreat, which causes them to speed up and deliver increased amounts of ice into the world's oceans, said CU-Boulder geology Professor Robert Anderson, study co-author.

Water controls how rapidly glaciers slide along their beds, said Anderson. When a glacier with its "toe in the water" thins, a larger fraction of its weight is supported by water and it slides faster and calves more ice into the ocean at the glacier terminus.

"While this is a dynamic, complex process and does not seem to be a direct result of climate warming, it is likely that climate acts as a trigger to set off this dramatic response," said Anderson, also an INSTAAR researcher.'

Not that this is necessarily what is happening here, it is helpful to get some SCIENCE in front of you yet again.

In pursuit of science about what is actually happening here, noting yet again that glaciers across Eastern Antarctica have been growing rather than retreating ... Large Iceberg breaks off Antarctica's Mertz Glacier | Science Daily
Feb. 26, 2010 — A joint Australian-French study has discovered the calving of a large iceberg from the Mertz Glacier in the Australian Antarctic Territory. The iceberg -- 78 kilometres long with a surface area of roughly 2,500 square kilometres, about the size of Luxembourg -- broke off the Mertz Glacier after being rammed by another iceberg, 97 kilometres long.
Decades in the making, scientists eagerly awaited the calving of this huge iceberg. A glacier can only grow so big after all. ;)

Noting again that the Mertz glacier adjoins Commonwealth Bay where the Russian and Chinese ships are stranded in impenetrable sea ice.

Do you understand the difference between the land and the sea?

You do realize that 'Global Warming' has to do with the entire planet, right? Not just the land? That's what Global means. Global Peace would be Peace on the entire planet, not simply the land of the planet.

Because of the greatly increased fossil fuel usage during rescue, the mission will now be required to plant thousands of trees rather than hundreds, simply to recover its own carbon footprint. It also seems that the normal inhabitants of Antarctica were less than impressed with the interlopers.

Forest needed to cover carbon footprint of icy rescue - National - NZ Herald News
In an interview with AFP yesterday director of the French Polar Institute Yves Frenot criticised the "pseudo-scientific expedition".

Because it had run into difficulties, it had drained resources from the French, Chinese and Australian scientific missions in Antarctica, he said.
Some might say the expedition is being thrown under the bus by others in the scientific community.
