  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I see, global warming caused thick ice that stranded the ship, that didn't take long.

Actually if you were even marginally familiar with this topic you'd know that thickened sea ice was discussed in global climate change research YEARS AGO!

Simulation of Recent Southern Hemisphere Climate Change
Interpretation of Recent Southern Hemisphere Climate Change
Non-annular atmospheric circulation change induced by stratospheric ozone depletion and its role in the recent increase of Antarctic sea ice extent - Turner - 2009 - Geophysical Research Letters - Wiley Online Library

http://www.nature.com/ngeo/journal/v6/n5/full/ngeo1767.html

At least one of these goes back more than a decade!

I highly recommend you please learn the science before you try to make clever comments about it.

Wasn't it noted some time ago that while sea ice around the north pole was disappearing it was increasing at the south pole? If so this event should be no surprise.

The sea ice is getting pushed out further and there's changes in the Southern Ocean mixing dynamics. The first part is apparently due to ozone depletion over the South Pole while the latter is due to the massive ice loss and melting of ice from the land in Antarctica.

Of course the "skeptics" on the board aren't even aware of this research, some of which goes back quite a while (like almost a decade in some cases).

Global warming research expedition cancelled due to too much ice.

You just can't make this stuff up

No kidding!

The next thing you know, people are going to claim the earth is round!

That makes Chris Turney look pretty stupid not knowing about ice before he went out on the expedition

Kinda like all the travelers at the airports that have canceled flights?
Chris Turney didn't cancel. He ventured somehow not knowing that global warming was going to cause him to get stuck in the ice. You really, really can't make this stuff up

Not specifically sea ice, but glaciation goes back far longer than that.

I recall my Geophysics Professor commenting that a slight increase in global temperatures could account for the ice ages.

Reason?

Because it would lead to increased precipitation and glaciers form when snow falls faster than snow melts. The increase in precipitation could be more than the increase in melting.

That was back when I was in college, 40 years ago.

neither did all the travelers who knew that big snow was coming.

Now, who's stupid?

They do a great job and people are giving them grief about it!

Before their ship got stuck in ice, the researchers were following the trail of the explorer Douglas Mawson, who was stranded in Antarctica for more than a year, beginning in December 1912, according to the website about the expedition.
Seems you really can make this stuff up!

And yet, you just did.

Yep, no matter what the contradiction, it's all caused by "climate change". Climatists don't use science. It's imore like a if you like your "science, you can keep it global lie.

So, without stressing you, in particular what specifically was bad science in these articles?

I'd be interested to know. Because I am pretty sure you wouldn't know anyway.

So instead of partaking of the usual logic fallacies, why not man up and take a stab at addressing the SCIENCE.

(Don't worry, I don't expect you to. You would have to know something about science to do that.)

Wow. Is this all too confusing for you?

The key to this and even the ENTIRE AGW debate is that it changes things to a point where we have trouble predicting exactly what is going to happen anywhere!

That's the POINT!!!

I'm not willing to say that the Tuney expedition is a proof of AGW, but that's because I'm a scientist and using one data point is absurd! That's for people like YOU who know nothing about science to do!

And you guys do it all the time!

What I pointed out was that science understands why the Southern Ocean's ICE PATTERNS CAN BE MORE UNPREDICTABLE!

Sheesh! It's like you can't think one step out!

But what is more sad is that you simply have no idea how this whole science thing works such that you would think ONE EVENT in the Antarctic was proof or disproof of AGW!

That's the saddest part.
