In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Global warming research expedition cancelled due to too much ice.

You just can't make this stuff up

lol-044.gif

It would help if you understood the science.

The ship in the Antarctic is ice-bound because of the high winds which are moving the ice out to where the ship is. Further the ozone depletion over the Antarctic has lead to stratospheric cooling which leads to changes in wind patterns in the Antarctic.

Meanwhile the land ice in significant parts of Antarctica is MELTING hence freshening the water around Antarctica which alters the MIXING profile of the water there.

WOuld you like to see the SCIENCE? (or will you simply ignore it because it is too hard or inconvenient?)

"... whipping winds pushed sea ice around the vessel, freezing it in place. "

Yes there was a blizzard (it is the Antarctic), but the winds pushed the ice out and it froze around the boat.

As noted earlier this is in keeping with the hypothesis that stratospheric cooling owing to ozone depletion has caused some massive winds which are pushing ice out into the water.

And I noted you didn't address at all the massive ice loss from Antarctica in general. Or the outflow of fresh water into the Southern Ocean

Why do you think Ice would be melting in Antarctica?

I wasn't stupid enough to get caught in the ice while trying to prove global warming :D:D:D

Well, in order to do ANYTHING meaningful in this debate you would have to actually learn some science first.

So in that area you're safe from any sorts of events like this.

OH, yeah, and if you accidentally ever travel to the arctic or antarctic do keep in mind it is still quite cold there, Dr. Einstein.

So according to you average worldwide temperature isn't increasing because it is cold in winter. Did you graduate high school?
The global climate is cooling, not warming. Did you even graduate high school?

The 20 to 30 year ocean temperature cycles turned back to warm from the late 1970s until the late 1990s, which is the primary reason that global temperatures warmed during this period. But that warming ended 15 years ago, and global temperatures have stopped increasing since then, if not actually cooled, even though global CO2 emissions have soared over this period. As The Economist magazine reported in March, “The world added roughly 100 billion tonnes of carbon to the atmosphere between 2000 and 2010. That is about a quarter of all the CO2 put there by humanity since 1750.” Yet, still no warming during that time. That is because the CO2 greenhouse effect is weak and marginal compared to natural causes of global temperature changes.
Forbes

The world stopped getting warmer almost 16 years ago, according to new data released last week.
The figures, which have triggered debate among climate scientists, reveal that from the beginning of 1997 until August 2012, there was no discernible rise in aggregate global temperatures.
This means that the ‘plateau’ or ‘pause’ in global warming has now lasted for about the same time as the previous period when temperatures rose, 1980 to 1996. Before that, temperatures had been stable or declining for about 40 years.

source

“Global warming is phony science that was concocted to justify implementation of an international political agenda. The idea of using ‘man-caused global warming’ as a ‘surrogate for war’ and as a way to ‘destroy excess wealth’ originated in American and UN-related think tanks such as the Club of Rome back in the 60′s and 70′s. This pseudo-science is the centerpiece of a phony environmental movement by which the UN hopes to redistribute wealth in the world (toward the super-rich and away from the people) to de-industrialize the industrialized countries (via the UN Kyoto Protocol-type carbon taxes, cap and trade schemes, etc.), and radically reduce the human population.”
Dr. Eric Karlstrom, Emeritus Professor of Geography at California State University

Global warming is a lie. Period. It's not happening.

Since it's summer in the southern hemisphere (as has been noted several times) that means it's winter in the northern hemisphere. Do you have proof of the glaciers coming back anytime soon?

Or more recent
Yes

It's true that there is no problematic global warming. If there were we would be doing something about it, i.e. if the grass gets too long we mow it, etc. It actually easier to determine that the grass is/was too long if we see someone mowing it. Grass that needs mowing isn't all that obvious to a passerby, but if we see and hear the mower we can justifiably assume that the grass was too long and that problem is now being addressed by the one doing the mowing.

The seriousness of a problem is determined by efforts to correct it, not by merely observing it. By this measure alone 'global warming' (or 'climate change') is not a serious problem.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't read a single word about glaciers in that BBC report about some German researchers.

When are those glaciers in the photos I provided coming back? It is winter up there right now. From your "science" they should be back where they were.

Well then why bother with the scientists?

Mowing the lawn is fine because when the grass gets too long you can just fire up the mower and mow it.

The real issue with global climate change is: it may be fast approaching a point that "firing up the lawn mower" will involve massive rearrangement of our priorities, our ability to feed ourselves, our ability to power our appliances, and might lead to massive economic stresses.

And if we wait any longer than THAT we are almost guaranteed massive economic collapses.

Think of it more like installing smoke detectors in your house. The house is not currently on fire but it COULD BE. At which point you HOPE you can wake up in time to escape dying in the fire.

The scientists are giving you a warning. A clear statement that we are entering into uncharted territory but there's almost no scenario in which this new territory works to our "advantage" (just as a house on fire will likely NOT be a place that is BETTER than your current non-house-on-fire home).

Ask the Chinese ship that is stuck in the ice about global warming. All a farce and Al Gore built his millions on a big lie.

Sharon, can I ask you honestly how much science training have you had?

Clearly the only global warming person you know is "Al Gore". He's not a scientist. Don't listen to what he says.

Listen to the thousands and thousands of independent scientists who have been working on this for the past 60 years all across the globe.

Today about 97% of the earth's climate scientists disagree with YOU.

And the rest of us who are other types of scientists, who couldn't care less about Al Gore, also find the science to be pretty solid.

So ask yourself: "Do I have enough science background to decree this to be 'lie'?"

The global climate is cooling, not warming.

Ummmm, not even close.

It may be currently in a "flat" region, but that is NOT a "cooling" trend.

In science there's a little thing called a REGRESSION LINE which, in order for you to claim it is "cooling" would require you to provide a statistical proof of a NEGATIVE SLOPE to the line.

Of course you can't (because the slope is NOT negative) for a couple reasons:

1. You don't know about regression statistics
2. You would be making an error in "windowing" the trend line down
3. You would have to ignore the numerous other "multi-year" "pauses" in the overall increasing trend data of the past 150 years

Did you even graduate high school?

I did. And I got a few degrees in science and use statistics every day in my work. Do you?

Here's a pro-tip for you: get your science from actual science sources and not business publications.

“Global warming is phony science that was concocted to justify implementation of an international political agenda.

So when this hypothesis was put forward in 1898 it was part of a political agenda? Is this also why Roger Revelle (a RESEARCHER) had to take it to the politicians in the 1960's to get people thinking about it?

Dude....please learn some HISTORY on this subject!

Global warming is a lie. Period. It's not happening.

So are you telling us that basic physics and chemistry is a lie too?????

Because if it is it will hurt everyone a lot!

So tell me, when did the O=C=O molecule start acting differently with respect to IR absorption? And what nefarious government cabal made it change?

I'm not laying the responsibility of addressing the problem on science. They've done their part by issuing a warning. It is government alone that can execute any action to mitigate the problem. They aren't doing it, and the obvious conclusion, imo, is that the problem isn't that great even though science believes that we should act sooner rather than later.
