  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The threat of our future is just as severe as if an asteroid as headed our way?
Man, that's bleak! Does the author of the article know what an asteroid impact will do to earth? I do. In exquisite detail. The fall of the US will very very likely not be nowhere near as powerful an event as an asteroid impact and the following issues. Well, that DOES depend on the size of the asteroid, but still.

It does amaze me to see Americans not caring about their nation enough to recognize it's decline. Well, I DID... Then I spent some time over there and watched the news. Now I am not surprised. There was nothing on about the crisis the US is experiencing as far as house prices go, and a LOT about Brittany Spears' sister getting pregnant. Talk about prime time news! Goodness! No wonder Americans don't care. Americans don't know! A friend of mine (American) lives in Bangladesh. He knew about the crisis. His brother - in the US - did not. And was looking to sell his house and buy a new one.

Here in Norway we have open lectures at the universities, debates in media about the imminent fall of the US. We follow the US with Argus eyes. It is in a decline now which will not turn around until the US has plummeted so far it's status as world leader in economy and military are both gone. Unless it goes totalitarian and focuses all it has on maintaining the war machine it has. But it's days of glory are all but spent. From this economic recession there is no getting back up. It has been coming for a long time, the US foreign policy and oil addiction have seen to that. But it may not have come as quickly had Bush not messed up as much as he did. It may not have come at all if someone in the presidency had turned off the idiocy and on the pursuit for technological development. Now, however, I fear it may be too late.
Modern GOPers don't care for that science talk.

Now get back to raising kids so they can pay off all this debt I be causing!

Thing is at this point the two remaining dem candidates will destroy the US economy.

I'm curious why you believe this.

They want to pull out of Nafta unless Canada and Mexico make concessions we will not.

There's a lot of strength being exerted from the big business side of things for a more integrated North America. I think, regardless of the candidate, we're going to see a move towards a North American bloc.
What big business wants, big business usually gets.

Clinton or Obama will collapse all three of our nations economically. Assuming there's any chance of staving off a collapse.

Hate to sound a pessimist but I dont think there is a chance.

Bush was an aberration.

The people pulling his strings arent though. As I'm sure you know, the figurehead isnt the one to worry about.

While McCain believes the US has to see the Iraq war through, I seriously doubt he'll start a new one. And he won't cut America's trade ties to it's immediate neighbors which make up more than half its trade.

From what I've read, McCain hasn't a clue when it comes to economics. You think he's competent in this area?

I think McCain is the best choice now, a Republican who can't be influenced by the Neo-cons because he has too much strength of will and character.

If that is/was the case, I'd agree with you 100%.
You think he's strong enough to boot out the neocons? What makes you believe this?

After he saves the boat from sinking, maybe then a dem can be elected to help the deckhands.

I think that the upcoming election should allow us Canadians vote as well. Heck, if the wrong leader steps in and cant save the sinking ship, we're up poop creek without a paddle too.:help:

Sounds like the typical doom and gloom stuff, although you get credit for not trying to sell stuff in conjunction with it. You mention how we are not going to get up from the recession; this is not the first time there's been a recession: they are a fact of economic life as any first year college student taking a basic economics course can tell you.

I also bet you 14 trillion dollars that the US hasn't stopped being an economic world leader :)

Sell something? Hmmm. Want a tube of toothpaste? No? It might help....
:p

Anyway... On a more serious note - yes, the US has faced recessions in the past. Only then the rest of the world were not switching away from trading with Dollars over to Yen or Euro. Nor was there such a wide distrust and indeed distaste for the US as there is now. A lot of people, even in your allied nations, hate the US with a fiery passion because of Bush.
Now, I am not saying the US will cease to be an influential part of the world. Most likely it will (except if a Bush wannabe gets elected). But the US has never had so much debt as it does now. Nor have other nations turned their backs on the US like they do now. And I know many Americans believe the US could exist perfectly well on top of it's imaginary pedestal indefinitely without the rest of the world's support. But alas, that is not how things really are. The US depends on foreign economies. The Dollar depends on people's trust and their use of it. As people shift from Dollars to Euro and Yen, the US economy will weaken further and the recession will continue. I really don't think anything will stop that now. What I do believe is possible is for the US to ease the blow it's getting. But I doubt a republican can get that done. I even doubt a democrat can, but my doubt is stronger in respects to the Republicans.

What Americans think about and what the media decides to tell us are two separate issues. If you want to know what Americans are interested in check the drudge report since that is where Americans really get their news.

Its a good thing Americans didn't listen to people who think like you during the first major US depression.
