  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I never figured out how. But I compromised. I dampened a washcloth, squeezed out the excess water, and wiped their fur. This did not get them completely clean, although it was useful whenever they rolled in the dirt. Also, after I was done, they would finish the job with their tongues. Much more tolerable.

Really, I'm not sure this is entirely necessary...

My wife, the ex-veterinary assistant, says that cats bathe themselves, and don't really need us to do it for them, but just need an occasional brushing (once a week or so).

Dogs, on the other hand...

Peace,

WJ

I was kind of wondering about the same thing. I've never given my cat/s a bath. They don't stink and their fur is soft and feels nice. They go outside too. So, tell me, you who give cats baths, why?
/me is puzzled.

I gave my cat a bath because her brother was always licking her and she smelled like his mouth and wet cat food. And another time she got my loose powder all over her so I had to wash it off. But she smells really good right now...like Loreal Color Vive shampoo and her fur is really soft.

My wife and I have three cats,. Two shorthair feral rescue cases that never need bath's. One Maine Coon that (for those who dont know about Maine Coon's) is a gentle giant of a cat that has long hair. Thankfully (Monty) is clean about his potty duties, if you know what I mean, but the kind of clumps he does get in his hair is from being an indoor/outdoor cat. He often comes home with small branches and bark chips entangled in his fur. Like Chow's of the canine world, Maine Coons have an undercoat, and stuff really gets stuck to him. Thankfully Maine Coons are also known to like water and Monty is no exception. He is always cooperative in baths, and he needs them often. My only suggestion for bathing a cat that does not like water, is to when you put the kitty in the tub or sink have someone put their hand over the cats face while grabbing the head in a firm manner with the one hand. But not so "firm" as to hurt the kitty, and when the cat starts to squirm kind of shake the head, actually its more of a rocking movement, again your not trying to hurt the kitty. Ive seen groomers use this method and for some reason the cats always behave when using this technique.

In my home we had a cattery (over 27 cats at any given moment) and a kennel (over 20 dogs), we raised pet and show stock in Siamese and Abbys, and German Shepards, Schnauzers, Cockers and Cairn Terriers for nearly 15 years. The cats we also showed. I was chief everything (feeding, cleaning, cat pans, diets, birthing, weaning, shots, assisting the vet with midnight c-sections, etc!) and, yes, I gave cats baths occasionally. This was done especially just before or after a show, or before sending a cat out or when getting them back from a breeding in another cattery. Sometimes they "get into things" that make bathing necessary - there are things you DON'T want them licking off their fur!;)

A lot depends on the relationship and authority you have with the cat and how much they trust you in what, to them, is a very threatening situation.

1) Have everything - and I mean everything - you are going to need ready and within reach

2) Run moderately warm water first and then bring the cat - not the other way around.

3) Proceed with the bath in a calm, orderly and not too lackadaisical manner. Calm alacrity is the order of the day.

4) BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU WASH YOU CAT WITH AND WHAT YOU PUT ON THEIR COATS!! As mentioned in other posts - cats are champion lickers/tongue bathers. Human shampoo and dog shampoos are not good choices - dogs and humans do not lick/bathe themselves the way cats do!! ^_^ You can have a dangerously sick cat on your hands very quickly. If you have done this without dire consequences you, and your cat, have been truly blessed by G-d!!

p.s. some times a nice pair of garden gloves and gauntlets work too!

I was just thinking about this the other day....Why not mix some of the shampoo with some warm water in a spray bottle. Then spray their fur and comb it out.
If you wish to try this be very sure to check with your vet. Most shampoos must be throughly rinsed out as they can be extremely toxic when ingested by cats by licking

I've had several cats, none of which liked baths. One thing I've learned is that cats hate showers. I think the best way to bathe a cat is to warm up some water in a kettle, put your cat inside your bathroom sink and gently pour warm water on it (oh, and avoid the head unless your cat is really really dirty and in that case you might wanna use some cotton puffs to protect their ears). Try to be as quick as possible.

If everything else fails, put the cat inside the toilet (throw some detergent into it as well), sit on the toilet lid firmly and flush a few times. Then simply remove the now-100%-clean cat from the toilet and dry it up with toilet paper. Works like a charm! ;)
