If no one were to tithe, there would be no churches. There would be very few food cupboards, homeless shelters, crisis pregnancy centers, mission efforts, ministers, choir directors, instruments in the service, chairs to sit on, counselors in a crisis. The world would have paid wedding and funeral facilitators, and expensive rental for these ceremonies.
Scripturally... I would challenge people to find verses that clearly declare a lifting of responsibility. We are free from the curse of the law of sin and death -- we are not bound by sin and the guilt of our sinfulness. Jesus still honored the festivals, broke bread at the Last Supper for Passover, read scriptures in the temple, paid taxes through the coin in the fish, had many conversations with religious leaders around the temple. He spoke about the heart of the law vs. rigid legalism.
If you are not bringing in money, then you have nothing to tithe ten percent on. Ten percent of zero is zero.
