I have been job hunting for the past several weeks. I got an email just now from Gideon's international (the people who put Bibles in hotel rooms etc. ) about an accounts payable position I applied for. They asked if I would be comfortable discussing my faith in an interview setting and if so to contact them to set up an interview.

Would there be any issues for me (LCMS) in interviewing and possibly working for Gideon's? I've emailed my pastor but haven't heard back yet. My dad found a question on the LCMS website about the gideons and there didn't seem to be an issue in beliefs.

I don't think so. In fact I think it would be kind of cool to work for that organization. Even so, it would only be wrong if they asked you to do something that contradicts the teachings of your faith.

I know that some pastors and principals of LCMS schools do not allow Gideons to distribute bibles in their school because of the Decisionist statement found inside the front cover of their student bibles.

Gideons are by creed Decisionists, and necessarily support that doctrine. From their website: Become a Christian

Become a Christian

Many people are looking for God. If you're one of those people, we'd like to share with you that the Bible has what you are seeking. It contains answers to life's vital questions, and—most important—can help you understand how to have a right relationship with God. Here are some selected verses:

God Loves You
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. —John 3:16
But God commendeth his love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. —Romans 5:8
All Are Sinners
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. —Romans 3:23
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one. —Romans 3:10
God's Remedy for Sin
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. —Romans 6:23
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. —John 1:12
All May Be Saved Now
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him. —Revelation 3:20(a)
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. —Romans 10:13
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. —John 20:31
Receive Christ as Your Savior Now...Pray the Following Prayer

Confessing to God that I am a sinner, and believing that the Lord Jesus Christ died for my sins on the cross and was raised for my justification, I now receive and confess Him as my personal Savior.

I just got back from my interview. It was ... odd. I'm honestly not expecting to be hired there. Along with regular interview questions, she asked me "When did you accept Jesus as your savior?" I explained that I am Lutheran and we don't have that doctrine but that I was baptized as a baby. She seemed like she had never heard of such a thing before. She asked me how long I had been a member of my church and I said "since we moved here about 20 years ago." She seemed amazed that I had been there so long. And she asked if I has ever felt a calling to be in ministry. I said no (though I was nervous and didn't think to explain that I can't because I am a woman). She made it seem like they were looking for a yes.

So, I'm not expecting much to come from that. Plus it's a 40 minute drive without traffic so yeah. Oh well.

Sorry it didn't seem to go well for you.

Yeah, they get stumped when we reject their doctrine because they THINK we aren't saved when we say stuff like that.

Hopefully something better will come along soon!

I got a letter from Gideons today saying they went with someone else. That's fine with me. I was actually kind of hoping they'd say no, that way I wouldn't have to be the one to decline ;) It was just too far away and their beliefs didn't quite jive with me.

The good news is, about an hour after I got the letter, I got a call from another place and they are offering me the job! It's literally a five minute drive from where I am currently working part-time. I am so excited! My first full time job!
