Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Psalm 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 “The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it”

ecc 12:7 seems to point out the dual nature of mankind indicating that he has both a body and a spirit

verses such as

Matt 8:21-22 (YLT)
And another of his disciples said to him, `Sir, permit me first to depart and to bury my father;' and Jesus said to him, `Follow me, and suffer the dead to bury their own dead.'

seem to indicate that there is more than one way to understand "the dead" in the bible than mere literal death.

but certainly if demons are like humans in that they have a mind then some of them could be tricksters.

I would be concerned with ghost as that would seem to indicate (if they are what they are commonly assumed to be) that they have some form of delusion about God since anyone who believed in God and died would want to be with God rather than caring about the things of the world.

Depends on your definition of demon. Going by Liddell and Scott for the definition of daimon (the NT source word), and the scientific evidence of ghosts, they are technically pictures of demons.

The real question is, are there any good, plausible arguments that ghosts and demons are separate?

I mean from the Bible or theology.

The closest, I'm aware of, for talking about something like a "ghost" is when we see the shade of Samuel appear to King Saul when he visited the the medium under the cover of night--an experience which the medium was entirely shocked by.

If you are going to quote Ecclesiastes than you must familiarize yourself with the context to the bulk of the book. It contains numerous secular arguments for the purpose of showing the futility of humanistic/worldly thoughts. It does so to advance a better mindset, one that honors and fears God.

Ecclesiastes 12:
13 Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the duty of all mankind.
14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.

As to what the dead saints know, Jesus said while their bodies are dead, they are still alive. For this reason Jesus started a trend in the NT church of referring to dead saints as sleeping.

As for ghosts being demons, I think you need to elaborate on what you call a ghost. If one uses a broad definition as any spirit making a physical presence known on earth to humans, than the Bible has many examples of angles/spirits appearing and delivering messages to people. Further there are examples of angels interacting with the physical as in killing the armies opposed to Israel. Scripture also says we should entertain strangers because they might be angels. Also at the transfiguration, Moses and Elijah made "ghost" like appearances.

Additionally there is the concept of human eyes being opened and being able to see spirits that surround us, like Elisha could see, 1 Kings 6:17. From Revelation we know that saints in heaven are aware of what is happening on earth, Revelation 6:9-10. Now Jesus told the story of a rich man and Lazarus that teaches of no benefit for the dead to return to earth, but it does not teach it as impossible, Luke 16:19-31. In fact Jesus compares a dead coming back to earth to a dead person being resurrected, which we know has happened. I would say it is not impossible for a dead saint to make an appearance on earth, although I believe the more common interaction is through angels which I believe saints in heaven can direct to a limited degree.

But, scripture does teach for us to not solicit the dead and engage in sorcery which is the work of Satan and his demons.

Lastly, there are examples of dead Christian "ghosts". Look at all the Mary apparitions. I will add of knowing a very religious person that claimed to see her dead grandmother. I also believe my dead Father-in-law to have caused a physical manifestation, where a plaster painting that sat on the wall of his house for over 20 years happened to fall shattered onto a plush recliner one week after he passed.

So far in this thread I have not seen any definitive text that says it is impossible for angles or dead saints to make appearances in this world.

1 John 4:1,4, NKJV. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God. . . You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
