• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I’m probably not surprising anyone when I say that another symptom ( botherance should be a word) is getting words mixed up in a prayer. At the very least it seems to have gone down to just an annoyance rather that horrific, so that’s one small victory I guess. I know that God knows what I meant and did so before I even started the prayer, but I still really don’t like this.

Don’t let it bother you . Most people my age tend to do that . It’s annoying more than anything . I used to tell people that I had 60 years of Rock n roll stuffed in my head and I had to look thru that to get the right word

Hey. I know exactly what you're going thru. This is one of the most difficult things OCD does. Bad words that I would never mean come into my prayers. God knows you don't mean them. He knows your heart. It's the fear of it that's causing it. God is love. Love would never hurt you because words you would never mean came into your prayers because of a tormenting illness.

I get this too. am only 38.

It is distressing. I was in a prayer ministry.session wasn't going well and I was v agitated and anxious. I was told to ask Satan to get out. I ended up saying get out Lord! The people prayi mg for me.though it was some kind of evil spirit. But I get it quite often when I pray on my own too

Are your words ACTUALLY getting mixed up, or do you just "feel" like they're getting mixed up? (I'm asking because with OCD, we often over-analyze our thoughts/words/feelings, and feel like we've said or meant something that we actually haven't.)

Actually mixed up, though I’m sure there are cases where I just feel it too. Like sometimes a “no” comes out as a “yes” or visa-versa.

I've felt this kind of thing before too - "feeling" like I mean something that I don't actually mean. It sounds like maybe you're at the point where you are responding in a healthy (non-obsessive) way, though? I mean, by recognizing that God knows what you mean even if you mess up (or feel like you mess up), and you're still able to move on and keep praying without engaging in a bunch of compulsions?

Sometimes I feel the need to repeat the prayer correctly a few times, but that’s it initially. Sometimes the wrong sequence of words sticks in my head, though.

Yes, that is annoying. Maybe it's the old green (or pink/red/really any color) elephant analogy...the more you don't want to think of something, the more it sticks around? :)
