Getting Started

I am kinda new. I would really love to get started with some creative writing, but I have never been great at it. I have actually never really tried. But the more and more I think about it the more I want to get started. The problem is I have no idea where to begin. So if anybody has and suggestions that would be great!!

Well normally I would just get on the computer, open up Word, and write whatever comes to me... that's actually almost how I created one of my best series (which I am in the works of rewriting in a book form because as I reread it some of the things I wrote is just too corny, lol). So, you could definitely try that approach.

But another thing I do, an idea just pops into my head and I write it down in case I ever want to use it. Right now, I'm focusing on about three different books (and I have over 50 ideas for other stories ). I even get some ideas from television shows, but I just use that idea for my basis, and I twist it to become my own.

Another thing. What do you like to write? Sci-fi? Fantasy? Reality fiction? What's your genre? I'm more of a science fiction writer than anything else.

write and read. Those two things go hand in hand. As you write more, you'll begin to notice subtle things in the books you read and that would help you pick out the weaknesses in your writing.

Thanks guys for ideas. I'll try them. Right now I'm not really sure what I am most intrested in writing cause I never tried before. So do you guys just write words or ideas that just pop in your head. Like I don't know but just anything.

I mainly start out with an idea and a plot. And then I work in the characters.

The other thing that works well for me is "Write what you know". There is only so far you can go making up a story that involves things you know nothing about. I have read many many stories and I can tell the difference between somebody who knows the subject matter, somebody who studied it and somebody who has no clue what they are talking about.

One thing you shouldn't do is read Dickens! It will kill you! He's just too good. You'll probably just sit there wondering how in the world he could ever do what he does.

First thing you should do is create a character. Then see what kind of ideas you get from that. And then just write what happens to that character. Make it interesting. Or don't. It's up to you. You'll learn the more you do it.
